A STATEMENT OF SUPPORT
FOR AN HI USA BOARD CANDIDATE
[Applicant Name] is applying for one of two at-large seats on the National Board of Directors of Hostelling InternationalUSA. These seats are voted on by the membership. Eligible candidates each will have an online profile that contains election information, including a statement of support from a professional or volunteer colleague who can speak to the candidate’s leadership abilities. Below is some context to assist you in preparing your statement. Thank you for assisting us in selecting highly-qualified directors.
Background
HI USA is a $50 million, 501c(3) nonprofit organization committed to advancing intercultural understanding through hostel stays and programming. It serves people of all ages, but its target audience is 18 to 30-year olds. With nearly 600 employees, 34 owned and managed hostels, and 20 affiliate hostels throughout the US, it is one of 80 national affiliates of Hostelling International, a nongovernmental organization based in England with more than 3500 hostels worldwide.
HI USAdirectors set the overall vision, priorities, policies, and budget that allow staff and volunteers to carry out the mission. Effective directors possess an inquisitive and objective perspective, strategic and practical wisdom, mature judgment, and commitment to the mission. They are able to constructively communicate their viewpoint with passion, thoughtfully consider the perspectives of their colleagues, and speak with one voice once a decision has been reached.
Preparation
Your statement of support should be addressed to the HI USA Board Development Committee and not exceed 300 words. It must include your name, street address, email address and phone number. You can expect to be contacted by a Board Development Committee member for follow up.
Your statement will be posted on a public web site along with other candidate information. The posting will include only your initials and hometown; your name and other contact information will not be publicly shared.
Submission
The deadline for submission of your statement of support is November 20, 2015, which coincides with the deadline for candidate applications. Please be timely, as candidate applications are not considered complete without a statement of support.
