ESOL Teacher/Co-ordinator - Action Language (Sunderland)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced teacher / co-ordinator to help set up a base in Sunderland of the English Language project (called Action Language) run by an award winning charity. Action Foundation is a Christian charity established in 2005, by City Church Newcastle, to support disadvantaged asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants in Tyne and Wear. We provide community ESOL classes, employability mentoring and supported housing. The charity has grown steadily to support over 1,000 people last year involving over 100 volunteers with an impressive track record of helping our clients to overcome their isolation, exclusion and poverty. Having operated in Newcastle since 2005 Action Foundation is now expanding its delivery into Wearside and has recently opened an office in Sunderland.
Action Language has a very community focussed model of delivering English teaching with a high ratio of volunteer teaching assistants to learners. This social and supportive environment improves not only their communication skills but also their confidence, health and wellbeing.
The successful candidate will work with the Project Manager to co-ordinate and deliverall aspects of the Action Language project in Sunderland and Newcastle as appropriate.This role will involve varying amounts of teaching and co-ordination of volunteers and learners.
You will have at least 4 years’ experience of teaching a variety of ESOL levels and classes, including IELTS preparation.You will have excellent organisational and communication skills with people from many different countries. Organisational Action Foundation is a Christian charity based in Newcastle and Sunderland that
context:provides opportunities for people to overcome their exclusion, isolation and poverty. This is expressed through providing supported accommodation for refused asylum seekers (Action Housing), and new refugees (Action Letting), as well as providing free and paid for English language classes (Action Language) for any migrant that cannot access mainstream ESOL classes.
Job Purpose:To assist the Action Language Project Manager with the setting up of the Sunderland office and day-to-day running of the Action Language English Classes in Sunderland and Newcastle. This role will involve varying amounts of teaching and co-ordination of volunteers and learners.
Time Commitment:35 hours per week – ideally full-time, though job share may be considered
Salary Scale:£19,874- £24,290 per annum+ 6% pension contribution
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaching:
- Exam preparation courses
- Prepare and deliver lessons to paying students preparing for exams over 8-12 week courses, particularly IELTS and Cambridge main suite exams.
- Coordinate mock exam practice and tutorials with the students.
- Liaise with freelance teachers who assist with course teaching, coordinating coverage of the syllabus and guiding/advising teachers as necessary.
- Other teaching
- Possibility ofabroad spectrum of English coursesfor all abilities, both paid and free.
- Teacher development
- Assist both freelance and volunteer teachers with any queries regarding materials, planning, classroom management and other areas for development, in collaboration with the Project Manager as appropriate.
- Ensuring student satisfaction
- Deal with student queries and direct them to the Project Manager if appropriate.
- Testing and student enrolment
- Use oral and written tests to ensure students are enrolled into suitable level classes.
Coordination:
- Recruitment and organisation of volunteers
- Working with the Project Manager to recruit qualified teachers and classroom assistants for free classes, and to coordinate and schedule their classes.
- Developing processes
- Assisting with the development of processes to ensure the smooth running of Action Language e.g. through record keeping and good communication.
- Office Management
- Occasional general admin tasks as required by the Action Language Project Manager.
General:
- Treat all information about learners and volunteers as confidential.
- Treat learners and volunteers equally and be sensitive to cultural and religious differences.
- To liaise between teachers, volunteers, learners and Action Language Managementas appropriate.
- Attend training sessions organised by Action Foundation as and when appropriate.
- To report to the Action Language Project Manager all relevant issues relating to learners and volunteers.
Personal Specification/Key Competencies
Knowledge/Experience;
- DELTA (desirable) or CELTA with 4+ years’ varied teaching experience (essential), or equivalent qualifications
- Experience of teaching a variety of ESOL levels and classes, including IELTS preparation (essential)
- Experience of co-ordinating volunteers and/or teachers – (desirable)
- A genuine desire to support asylum seekers and other migrants – (essential)
- Some basic awareness of the issues facing asylum seekers– (desirable)
- Experience of working with vulnerable people in a similar capacity - (desirable)
- An understanding of the need for confidentiality – (essential)
- An understanding of the need to maintain safe working boundaries – (essential)

- Good teaching and presentation skills
- Able to use own initiative to solve problems
- Fully versed in the use of computer software e.g. Microsoft Office
