1st CCA Review
- The digestive system system’s main function is to breakdown food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the villi in the small intestine to feed the cells in the body.
- When opposite forces are balanced (→←), no movement occurs, and no work is done.
- Skeletal system’s 2 main functions: 1.protection and 2. support.
- Muscular system’s 1 main function: 1.produce movement
- If there is no movement, there is no work done. There MUST be movement for work to have occurred.
- Physical change–only changing the shape of a substance, such as when chewing food.
- Chemical change– creating a new substances, such as a gas. This occurs in the digestive system whenever gas is created when there was no gas before.
- Work = Force X Distance
- Force is measured in Newtons
- Distance is measured in Meters
- …therefore, Work = Newtons X Meters
- Newtons X Meters = “Newton Meters” also called “joules”
- …therefore, Work is measured in “Newton Meters” also called “Joules”
- If a man pushes a cart with 10 Newtons of force, and the cart moves a distance of 5 meters, how many Joules of work did the man do on the cart?
- When many similar cells are seen together, it is called tissue.
- When acid is poured on something, and gas is created, it is a chemical change because a new substance is created (gas).
- Molecules/Compounds - one or more different elements(atoms) that are bonded together (they are not easily separated).
- Organic molecule/compound- contains AT LEAST one Carbon (C) AND one Hydrogen (H). They MUST contain BOTH!!
- The below molecule is an organic compound because it contains Carbon AND Hydrogen.
- The above molecule/compound can be written as C12H22O11. It is organic because it contains both Carbon (C) AND Hydrogen (H).
- Stomach acid, enzymes, and bile all create chemical change when mixed with food. They do this by breaking big molecules into smaller molecules. These smaller molecules can be absorbed as nutrients by the villi in the small intestine.
- Villi- increase the surface area of the small intestine which allows for greater absorption of nutrients
- Bone Marrow - Our blood is made inside the bone marrow which is in the center of our bones.
- There is an enzyme inside our saliva that chemically digests food. Digestion is the breaking of large molecule into smaller molecules that are absorbable by the villi in the small intestine.
