NORTHERN SEMINARY JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: LibraryClerk Status: Non-Exempt/Part-Time, Temporary
Department:Northern LibraryReports To: Library Director
Position Summary:The Library Clerk’s responsibilities include assisting patrons with the circulation of library materials, providing basic research assistance, receiving student payments for fines, and sorting returned library materials for Northern and other I-Share libraries. There will also be some special library project assignments. Initially all student workers will report to the Library Director. Student may report to a part-time library staff member after an initial training and probationary period. Positions are available at the Lisle Center. Limited hours(no more than 4 per week) are also available at the South Side Center (Hirsch High School/M.A.-Urban Leadership).
Hours will range from4 - 10 per week, between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on selectedweekdays. Saturday hours may become available.
Knowledge and Skills: This position requires someone who is knowledgeable of how to reserve, check out, and return books via a library catalog system (Voyager preferred);is familiar with either the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress classification system;and has knowledge of Microsoft tools (e.g. Word, Excel). A general knowledge and understanding of office procedure is a plus. The position requires providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff – on campus and remotely. Previous work in a library is useful, but not mandatory, if you have used the library extensively as a student. Above all, you must be punctual, willing to learn new/routine library procedures, and willing to perform other duties during slow periods.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Shelving a cart of books each day, or as needed;
- Shelf-shifting and general maintenance of reference and circulating collections;
- Searching for missing or lost items;
- Promptly checking in library returns;
- Receiving and returning I-Share requests;
- Mailing books to students as needed;
- Routine shelf-reading to ensure correct re-shelving;
- Answering incoming calls; re-routing calls to correct department as needed;
- Monitoring the use of the photocopier and re-stocking paper and correcting minor malfunctions (e.g., paper jams) as needed;
- Maintaining a neat and orderly library environment by routinely collecting books, journals, and other library items from tables, study rooms; and preparing them for re-shelving;
- Enforcing library security when alarms sound;
- Trouble-shooting for minor computer malfunctions (e.g., re-starting after power failures);
- Showing students how to search the catalog and/or order books from the library/their personal computers;
- Assisting patrons with general reference/circulation questions;
- Following correct procedures for opening and closing the library;
- Following fire and safety procedures;
- Assisting with other tasks during slower periods.
Education and Work Experience: A completed undergraduate degree. Extensive library experience in the absence of a degree.
Compensation: $10.00/hour
