ALEXANDRIA – DAY TOURS

Half-day Catacombs & Pompey’s Pillar tour Alexandria

(Half-day tour – departs daily – Min. 2 pax)

Visit the National Museum, Catacombs and Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria.

The Alexandria National Museum is located in the building of the former American consulate and was inaugurated on 31st December 2003. It is home to about 1 800 artifacts spread across three floors dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman & Coptic Christian as well as Islamic periods. One of the museum’s most interesting displays features various artifacts recovered from the sea around Alexandria, including pictures of the salvage operation.

The Alexandrian Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are unique among the catacombs of the ancient world because they feature a fusion of Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles that can’t be found anywhere else. The lower levels of this site are still submerged in water and inaccessible to visitors. It is recommended one brings shoes that can get muddy and a flashlight along on this visit.

Pompey’s Pillar is one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected. Its name however is an error as it was actually erected to celebrate a victory by Emperor Diocletian over an Alexandrian revolt and has nothing to do with Emperor Pompey.

Half-day Montazah Gardens & Qaitbay tour Alexandria

(Half-day tour – departs daily – Min. 2 pax)

Visit Montazah Gardens, the Aquarium and Qaitbay in Alexandria.

Montazah Gardens contain a wide variety of plants and trees some of which are quite rare as well as public swimming pools and wading pools. They are also home to two palaces, Salamlek Palace which these days has been turned into a hotel, and Haramlek Palace which has been turned into a museum.

Alexandria’s Aquarium was built in 1930 and is located near Qaitbay Citadel. It is home to numerous examples of marine life from the Mediterranean, Red Sea even some freshwater species from the Amazon and the Nile.

Where once stood the legendary Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, now stands Qaitbay Citadel. The Citadel was built in 1477 AD, by a Mameluke Sultan of the same name, in order to protect against the rising threat of the Ottoman Empire.
