Job Description

Job Title: Youth Leader

Employed by:The PCC of St Peter’s Church

Reporting to:Associate Priest or Vicar

Direct reports:Volunteers

Purpose:As a member of the Ministry Team, to lead the church’s youth work (11-18yrs), to run Youth Café, to act as Chaplain to the choristers, and to develop and implementa comprehensive integrated programme for the various youth activities.

Job status:Permanent. This is a 50% post, equating to a total of 20 hours a week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • To lead Youth Café (14-16yrs) (currently held on term-time Sundays at 11.15am)

-To co-ordinate the term rota

-To develop and monitor termly input

-To lead and/or support the gatherings

-To grow and manage the team of helpers

  • Choir Chaplain

-To attend choir practice on Tuesday and Friday evenings in term-time in order to develop relationships with the choristers (aged 7-18yrs) and their parents

-Liaise with Music staff and Choir Support Assistant

  • To encourage involvement of choristers in all youth activities
  • To develop a new group for 11-14yrs
  • To develop and implement a plan for 16-18yrs
  • To work closely with the Children’s Leader, in co-leading Friday@FiveThirty(currently held on term-time Fridays at 5.30pm)
  • To liaise with St Albans Diocese office and the 2:67 Project to engage with the opportunities that they offer
  • To be involved in the All Age Sunday Services and occasionally preach
  • To continue to build a team ofvolunteersfor all youth groups
  • To maintain the highest standards of safeguarding and to work within safeguarding guidelines and policy
  • To be responsible for own administration

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • To liaise with secondary schools, developing relationships and opportunities to support themmore actively
  • To help organise the youth section of both church fairs (Winter and Summer)

Person Specification: The church and its leadership have focussed on developing children’s and youth work in recent years and delight in its growth. We seek to build on this real potential and develop it further. The successful applicant will be a committed Christian with a passion for showing God’s love to all young people so that they know how valued they are. They will want to become actively involved with our church community. They should be able to work and worship within our style of worship that is central Anglican with a strong choral emphasis.

The applicant should:

-Have a positive ‘can do’ attitude

-Have the flexible ability to work in the fluid environment of youth work, involving parents, staff and volunteer teams

-Be a good team player and self-starter

-Have good communication, organisational and administration skills (ideally strong IT skills for multimedia/web, social media, print)

Experience: The applicant must have experience and a proven track record of working with youth and proven track record of leadership.

Hours, Terms and Conditions:

This is a permanent, part-time post for 20 hours a week worked throughout the year based at St Peter’s (office space provided). The flexible pattern is to be agreed, including attendance at the weekly Tuesday morning staff meeting(as needed), monthly ministry team meeting, Friday youth activities, Sunday morning Youth Caféand other youth groups as they are developed.

The role may also be suitable for an individual who has the required skill-set to combine it with the Children’s Leader post. Please indicate if you wish to apply for both positions and complete the application form with details relevant to both roles.

This role has an occupational requirement to be filled by a committed Christian, active in church life. Equality Act 2010, Part 1, Schedule 9 applies.

The post is subject to enhanced DBS disclosure.

Salary:£12,000 p/a(fte £24,000)

Salaries are reviewed each year in the light of inflation and increases in average earnings.

There is an auto-enrolment pension scheme in place.

Annual leave entitlement is 25 working days (pro rata) plus the statutory Bank Holidaysand time off in lieu is offered for any Bank Holidays worked (eg Good Friday, Easter Day and Christmas Day).
