Appendix 7 – Junior Championship Format
The Junior Championship is for drivers aged 12 to 16, running over 10 rounds between February and November (with a Summer break in August).
At each round, Drivers will compete in a 5 minute practice session, followed by 3 heats - each approximately 12 minutes long. Grids for each heat are produced at random, but each Driver will be allocated a mix of Grid positions on a 'Front / Middle / Back' basis. Adding the Grid Positions together, the total for each Driver should be +/- 2 positions.
Points are scored based on the following :
1st - 25pts, 2nd - 24pts, 3rd - 23pts etc decreasing by 1 point per position down to 25th which is 1pt.
Generally, the maximum Grid size is 20, but depending on Driver Numbers and / or Circuit requirements, we will run up to 25 karts.Grid sizes can vary from round to round, but the structure of Points will remain the same.
At the end of each round, there is a podium presentation for the top 3 Drivers in (in terms of points scored). In case of a 'Tie' in the points total, positions are decided firstly by a countback of race results, and if required, by the fastest race lap.
The maximum points that can be gained at each round is 75pts (25+25+25).
Weight Regulations
Allocation to Weight Classes - For the first 3 rounds of the Junior Championship the following will apply:
1. There will be a 2kg ‘tolerance’ applied to the Junior Plus class. A driver can state their wish to race in the Junior Plus weight class if they are no morethan 2kg under the class weight limit of 60.00kg
2. If a driver wishes to be considered for the Junior Plus Class, then they must finally nominate this class at round 3 after weigh in and onlyif they have weighed in at the correct weight for the Junior Plus Class at least once in the first 3 rounds. Weighing in within the weight tolerance (i.e. underweight) for all of the first 3 rounds will result in the driver being placed in the lower weight class.
3. Therefore each driver’s weight class becomes fixed at round 3 after weigh in and before racing commences.
4. Drivers will keep all points scored during the first 3 rounds regardless of whether they have changed from Plus to Standard or vice versa during the first 3 rounds.
5. After round 3 the weight tolerance will no longer apply. Any driver weighing underweight for Junior Plus at round 4 onwards will not scorepoints in Junior Plus, but will be moved into the Standard weight Class once for the rest of the season and will only score points inthe Standard Class. They will not be able to transferchampionship points scored previously.
6. It is allowed to race ‘Overweight’ in the Standard Class, however, if a driver in the Standard class insists to change to Plus class, after Round 3, they will not be allowed to keep their points scored in the Standard Class.
7. After Round 3, only one change of Weight Class is permitted.
8. In special circumstances, a driver may make a special request to the organising committee to change class (or subdivision)‘outside’ of these rules. This request should be made (preferably in writing) to the organising committee. The organising committee will consider this as a special request and may reach a conclusion outside of the rules.
General Format
- The CovKartSport Junior Championship will take place annually, typically between February and November, with a summer break during August. The Junior Championship will consist of a minimum of 5 events and up to 10 events (rounds) that will be held at different venues, according to availability and Insurance requirements for use of the Karts.
-The format for each round of the Junior Championship (excluding the Open Championship Round)will be a short 5 minute practice followed by 3 sprint races, lasting 12 minutes each.
-Races may vary in number of laps from circuit to circuit, depending upon weather conditions and circuit lap time to allow for a race time of as close to 12 minutes as possible.
-The organisers of CovKartSport will provide a grid schedule for the races. In general, every driver taking part will have a balance of grid positions to within +/- 1places with every other driver taking part. That is to say that if a driver adds up the sum total of his/her grid places in all 3 races it should only vary bya maximum of 2 compared with every other driverin their class for the entire event, which amounts to 2/3 of a single grid position (advantage or disadvantage) per race. Thissystem is very fair and is the type used in MSA kart racing.
-Regardless of how many karts start or finish a race - every race will be worth 25 points to the winner. Places are scored down by one-pointincrements throughout the order e.g. 1st=25pts, 2nd=24pts, 3rd=23pts, 4th=22pts, 5th=21pts etc.
-The maximum points a driver can achieve per day is 75
-Tied scores are decided by a countback of race finishing positions, and if still tied, the fastest race laps of the day.
-At the end of the season each driver will count their 24 best scores towards the Junior Championship.
-A driver cannot count a race Disqualification as a dropped score at the end of the season.
