Newsletter January2017

Happy New Year

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all of our children, families and carers. We look forward to working in partnership this year.

Staffing

Mrs Christie, P.1b teacher, is unfortunately still absent. Currently Mrs Erunlu and Mrs Young have been covering the class. Mrs Young is no longer able to continue and we are endeavouring to find a full time teacher for the class.

Mrs Archibald will now take P.6 on Mondays for the rest of this term.

Diary Dates - reminder

School is closed to pupils on Friday 10th, Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th February for half term and on Wednesday 15th February for In-service training for staff.

We close at 2.30pm on Friday 31st March for our Spring holidays and reopen on Tuesday 18th April.

Parents / Carers are welcome to attend our Chinese New Year Assembly (led by P2) at 2.15pm on Thursday 2nd February.

Mrs McCaffery has arranged a range of clubs which start this month. More will follow next month.

Bollywood Dancing

Miss Ali will shortly be offering an after school club in Bollywood Dancing. Further information will follow.

Glasgow West Sevens Football League

Thornwood will now be participating in the Glasgow West Sevens League. P6 and P7 children will shortly be receiving letters inviting participation. Additional football coaching will be offered as an after school club to further develop skills.

Music

Our P3 and P4 classes are having YMI Music workshops every alternate Monday this term. P1a, P1b, P2 and P3/2 enjoyed these activities in Terms 1 and 2.

PEthis term

All children in P3-7 classes are having Basketball sessions with Fever coaches on Wednesdays.

P6 and P7 are also having 3 weeks of Basketball coaching with Jump2it. Some of the children will then take part in a tournament at the Emirates Stadium. Thornwood Primary has managed to get through to the finals of this event for the past 3 years, so good luck to our players this year!

P7 have a block of Athletics coaching on Fridays.

P4s have a 6 week block of football coaching on Fridays, called Soccer 4.

P5 are enjoying their Friday swimming block. The last swimming session is on Friday 20th January 2017.

Please ensure your child has suitable indoor shoes for PE lessons – i.e. sandshoes or trainers.

We still have some PE bags for sale in our school office at a cost of 50p.

Health and wellbeing

P5-7 classes took part in the Jump2it Road-show on 11th January, with professional players from the Glasgow Rocks Basketball team. In addition to some coaching from the players, the children had workshops on ‘Healthy Eating’, ‘Bouncing Back’ and ‘Ready2work’.

Well done toAbishaa in P7,who came first in the end game during the Road-show. She won 2 tickets to a Rocks game.

Congratulations to Maja in P7, who was selected as Most Valued Pupil (MVP)!! She won 4 tickets and will be the mascot ata Rocksgame!!

Parent Meetings

We are looking forward to seeing parents and carers at our Parents’ Evening on Wednesday 18th January. This is an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with our class teachers.

Numeracy Improvement Challenge – Sharing Approaches

Parents/carers are invited to attend a session sharing approaches to teaching maths. You will have an opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and observe a range of maths activities. This will take place on Wednesday 1st March at 1.30pm. Further details will follow.

Parent Council

The next Parent Council Meeting is Monday 6th February at 7pm. All are welcome.

Uniform

Please remember to encourage your child to wear school uniform. Please note that jeans and jogging trousers are not school uniform.

If you wish to purchase uniform items they can be ordered from the school office throughout the year. Nearly new items are also available for a voluntary donation. We are continuing to aim for 100% of our children in school uniform.

Blairvadach

Our P7 children are going on their 5 day, 4 night, visit to the Blairvadach Outdoor Centre from Monday 6th until Friday 10th March 2017.

P7 parents and carers are invited to an information meeting on Tuesday 17th January at 9.15am in our gym hall. Parents/carers were sent a separate letter about this. Please check school bags!

The trip must be paid in full by Tuesday 31st January.

Please note we are no longer issuing a paper copy of our newsletter, unless you have requested this from our office. You should have received a text message to let you know this latest newsletter has been added to our website. Please check our website regularly:

Timekeeping

Please aim to get your child to school on time and collect them promptly by 3pm. Regular late coming can have an impact on your child’s progress.

The cost of being late to school

  • 5 mins late = 3 days lost
  • 15 mins late = 10 days lost
  • 30 mins late = 19 days lost

Please note that children are supervised in the playground in the morning from 8.45am.

Parents who wish to drop off their children before this time should use the breakfast club, however children must be in the breakfast club by 8.30am. Full details about breakfast club are on our website.

Collection of children during the day

If you require to collect your child from school during the day please notify the office in advance so that we can arrange to have your child ready to be collected.
