Market Hall’s sizzling late night feasting and shopping event, November 18

Shrewsbury Market Hall kicks off the festive season on Wednesday November 18 when its cosmopolitan cafes and gift stalls open for a sizzling late night of feasting and shopping

The market’s popular cafes and restaurants, ranging from seafood and Oriental to street-style and Spanish, will be offering both eat-in and special take-out dishes.

It is the night of the town’s Christmas lights switch-on and ukulele band Community Uke will kick off festivities in the Market Hall at 5.30pm. There will also be complimentary warmed mulled wine and mince pies for shoppers and a Hunt the Father Christmas Competition for youngsters.

St Chad’s Choir will fill the air with Christmas songs from 6.30pm to 7pm and Community Uke will perform again from 7.15pm to 8.30pm.

All the market’s restaurants will be open late including the continental-style Saint Pierre Seafood Bar.

Dishes will include celebrated fishmonger-chef Ian Cornall’s signature Bouillabaisse, a Provencal-style seafood stew that is featured in the newly published ‘Made In Shropshire’ recipe book, local line-caught Tywyn mackerel baps, seafood platters and cullen skink, a warming Scottish smoked haddock chowder.

Ian sources his fish, crabs and lobster fresh from small family-owned inshore day boats in Cornwall, Wales, Scarborough and Scotland.

Moli Teahouse will be serving Beijing pork dumplings and real Chinese tea along with dumpling taster platters, including seafood and vegan varieties, and new speciality oolong teas.

Mayuree’s House of Yum will be offering street-style aromatic Thai dishes and licensed Spanish restaurant Café AleOli will open late for tapas and paella. The Market Buffet will celebrate with a Christmas fare theme to its menu.

“There is always a wonderful festive feel to the market at our late-night seasonal openings, especially on the night of the Christmas lights switch-on,” said facilities manager Kate Gittins.

“All our eateries are laying on something really special this year. And whatever the weather is doing outside, it will be dry and festive in here.”

The market will host a similar event on Wednesday December 16 when Carols in The Square will be relayed live to the Market Hall.

Live bands and choirs will perform in the market on Saturday December 12 and 19.

The popular Bird’s Nest Café will be holding special ticketed events on Saturday December 5 and Saturday December 19. Spanish tapas restaurant Café AleOli is staging ticketed Flamenco nights on Thursday December 10 and Thursday December 17.

For last minute gifts and Christmas food shopping the Market Hall will be open Monday December 21 to 24 from 8am to 4pm.
