Teacher Education Code of Conduct
In accordance with the mission statement and goals of CSI, as well as those within the Education Department, students are expected to abide by a code of conduct to ensure the establishment of an educational, cooperative, and safe environment conducive to learning and growth. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, both in dress and in character, during all Education courses (including online), internships and/or field experience opportunities. Respect is to be given to external organizations and their personnel and students and to all members of the Education Department, including fellow students, staff, and faculty, regardless of race, age, gender, or religious background. Dishonesty in any form, including cheating and plagiarism, will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. It is hoped that students will develop an inherent desire to learn and grow, not only here at CSI, but also throughout their professional careers, in the community, and in their own personal lives.
Course Description:This course provides students with practical, hands-on experience in K-12 classrooms for the purpose of exploring teaching as a career. Under the supervision of a cooperating teacher, students observe and aide in various classroom settings and duties respective to the student’s field of study. Field experience placement is based upon availability and need in a school district. In addition to the field experience component, students participate in class forums where teacher education topics are discussed. (This course addresses Idaho Core Teacher Standards 2, 6, and 9).
Prequisite:Instructor permission. Student must be a current paraeducator or a current long-term substitute teacher in a k-12 school.
Required Textbook and Supplies: There are no required texts for this course.
Course Objectives: By participating in actual school functions, the student will:
- Better understand career opportunities within the field of education.
- Appreciate the relationships that exist between the teacher and the students, parents,
colleagues, and administration.
- Perform some actual learning experience while under the close supervision of a
professional teacher or approved supervisor.
Student Learning Outcomes and Assessments:
Outcome: Upon completion of the course, the student will have completed a minimum of 45 contact hours per enrolled credit of supervised K-12 classroom or related educational experience.
Assessment: The cooperating teacher or supervisor will complete an evaluation of the student’s performance, using a College of Southern Idaho Education Department Evaluation of Student Performance form (see attached).
Policies and Procedures:
- Complete the Education Field Form by the end of the first week of the semester
- Complete contact hours as applicable to course credit
- Complete and submit the Student Performance Form by Tuesday of Final’s Week
Behavior: The student’s behavior is to be appropriate to a positive learning environment. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner in this course. Students should treat the cooperating teacher/supervisor and K-12 students with respect and should be thoughtful in their contributions to the K-12 setting. Students must follow policies and procedures set forth by the cooperating school, including dress code, body art, and jewelry.
Hours of Applied Education:Students are assigned to a cooperating school. Students must complete a minimum 45 contact hours per enrolled credit in an organized classroom with a certified teacher. While fulfilling the minimum number of hours, the student may be engaged in any or all of the following activities:
- Observing classroom instruction
- Individual instruction
- Working with small groups of students
- Organizing class activities
- Performing other duties that are normal in a teacher’s everyday activities
- Approved activities
CSI email: Since email is the primary source of written communication with students, all registered CSI students get a college email account. Student e-mail addresses have the following format: <address>@eaglemail.csi.edu where <address> is a name selected by the student as a part of activating his/her account. Students activate their accounts and check their CSI e-mail online at Instructors and various offices send messages to these student accounts.Students must check their CSI e-mail accounts regularly to avoid missing important messages and deadlines. At the beginning of each semester free training sessions are offered to students who need help in using their accounts.
On-line course evaluation statement: Students are strongly encouraged to complete evaluations at the end of the course. Evaluations are very important to assist the teaching staff to continually improve the course. Evaluations are available online at: Evaluations open up two weeks prior to the end of the course. The last day to complete an evaluation is the last day of the course. During the time the evaluations are open, students can complete the course evaluations at their convenience from any computer with Internet access, including in the open lab in the Library and in the SUB. When students log in they should see the evaluations for the courses in which they are enrolled. Evaluations are anonymous. Filling out the evaluation should only take a few minutes. Your honest feedback is greatly appreciated!
