Ancient Order of Hibernians in America
Sean MacBride Division
Trumbull County, Ohio
Dear Trumbull County High School Senior,
Thank you for your interest in the 15th annual AOH Irish Heritage Scholarship Essay Competition. The Sean MacBride Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) was organized in Trumbull County 17 years ago. It has been our desire to make a contribution to the youth of our county and at the same time foster within them an interest in Irish heritage and history. To that end, we are sponsoring the 15th annual Irish Heritage scholarship essay competition, which is open to all high school seniors in Trumbull County. There will be both a $1000 and $500 cash scholarship awarded. The cash scholarship will not affect the amount of any other scholarships or financial aid received. The theme of this year’s essay competition is: “Why do so many people want to be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day?”
There are no restrictions on the approach or content of the essay, however, some topics, which you might wish to explore include:
1. The contributions of the Irish in America, such as arts, sciences, music, literature, firefighting and politics,
2. The Irishman they most admire,
3. The success of the Irish in America, and
4. The Irish immigrants’ choice of career upon arriving in America (i.e. miners, police, etc.).
We want to encourage you to be as creative and imaginative as you like. You may even wish to include a touch of Irish humor. Remember, however, the membership’s intention is to instill an appreciation of the Irish heritage and history. We have selected a highly qualified judge to determine the winners. The scholarships will be awarded on Saturday, March 7, 2015, as part of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration sponsored by the AOH. The awards ceremony and a traditional Irish breakfast will be held at the Mocha House in downtown Warren, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Should your essay be selected as one of the winning essays, we would hope that you would agree to be our guest at the breakfast.
Please complete the enclosed application form and return the application along with your essay (approximately 500 words), to the address indicated on the form, no later than February 20, 2015. We appreciate your interest in this effort. Should you have any questions, please contact me at 330-856-5061.
Sincerely,
Kevin Murphy
