1ST ANGLICO MARINES RETURN FROM AFGHANISTAN

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. –Marines and sailors of 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, will return to Camp Pendleton from Afghanistan Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. after a six-month deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Approximately 20 personnel make up the Supporting Arms Liaison Team C, the unit returning Wednesday. SALT C specializes in working with air power, close-air support, and urban combat providing the Marine Air Ground Task Force Commander with liaison capability with foreign area expertise, to plan, coordinate, and conduct terminal control of fires in support of joint, allied, and coalition forces.

1st ANGLICO is comprised of a Division Cell, which focuses on planning and communication and is led by a combat arms Lieutenant Colonel, a Brigade Platoon, which supports a brigade or friendly force and is led by an artillery officer Major, a Supporting Arms Liaison Battalion, which provides a comprehensive fire support coordination capability for a supported battalion and is led by a Naval Aviator who holds the billet of a Forward Air controller, and lastly a Firepower Control Team Company, which is the basic unit of ANGLICO operations and can be created on an ad hoc basis.

ANGLICO units have been employed since the formation of Joint Assault Signals Company units who fought in the Pacific theater during World War II. JASCO units were used to coordinate air, artillery, and naval gunfire support between Marines, Army, and the US Navy during the Pacific “island hopping campaign. After the disbandment of JASCO units, their responsibilities were transferred to the US Navy in 1947. 1st ANGLICO was activated March 2, 1951 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and now resides at Camp Pendleton, Calif. 1st and 2nd ANGLICO units were deactivated in 1999, but in 2003, amidst the US war in Iraq and the Global War on Terror they were activated again. 1st ANGLICO is one of six ANGLICO units.

Coordinating Instructions:

Please provide your name, agency, and contact information when you RSVP. Members of the media will meet at Camp Pendleton’s Las Pulgas gate no later than 2:30 p.m. where they will be met by Cpl. Suhr and escorted to the site. The event will take place outdoors and access to electrical power will not be available. Vehicle access to the event is not restricted and live broadcasts capabilities should not be difficult to facilitate.
