Summary Paper – 40 points

Background and Instructions

The Summary Paper consists of five distinct sections. Each section is worth up to 8 points for a total of 40 points. The intent is to provide a summary of your learning throughout the quarter and serve as an opportunity to bring all the information together.

You are asked to respond thoroughly and thoughtfully to each question directly on this page. When complete, the Summary Paper should be the approximate length of a five-page paper, including questions. When asked, be sure to include examples and connections to class material and/or outside resources in your answer. If you use outside resources in your response, please cite them.

Once you have completed your assignment, submit it in the appropriate location by the due date. Files ending in .doc, .docx, .rtf or .pdf are required for electronic submissions.

Section One:

At the beginning of the term, you were asked to assess your current stressors in Assignment #1.

Questions for Section One:

  1. Restate your Perceived Stress Scale (Assessment #3) and ICSRLE score (Assessment #4) from Assignment #1. (2 pts)
  2. Select and name two areas of stress identified on your ICSRLE score. Discuss how the course materials have given you new insights into how you view these stress sources and how you manage them. Include specific examples of course material and textbook material in your response. (6 pts)

Section Two:

For this section of the summary paper, we are reviewing different aspects of personality.

Questions for Section Two:

  1. Review the ‘Anger’ section in Chapter 8. In the ‘Anger Blocker’ section the authors included 14 bullet points with suggestions for keeping anger in check. Choose two different points and discuss how you are currently, or intend to, incorporate in your daily life. Include course materials that potentially influenced these changes. (4 pts)
  2. Provide at least two insights you have gained from this course into your time management. Refer to pages 182-190. (4 pts)

Section Three:

Assignments #6 and #7 provided opportunities to practice coping and relaxation strategies. Discuss which strategies you chose for those assignments. What was particularly meaningful to you and provided new insights into how you can manage stress in your life? Have you chosen to continue the strategy? Why or why not? What other additional information would you like to share? In your discussion, provide specific examples and include quoted information from the textbook to support your conclusion.

  2. Relaxation Strategies (based off of Assignment #7) (4pts)

Section Four:

For this section of the summary paper, we are reviewing Chapter 15, which describes Healthy Lifestyles, including healthy nutrition and physical activity. Include course materials to in your responses.

Questions for Section Four:

  1. Discuss the relationship between your nutrition, eating behaviors and how they relate to stress in your life. (4 pts)
  2. Describe your current physical exercise program and how it impacts your current stress levels and/or management. (4 pts)

Section Five:

Throughout this course, we’ve covered the physiological, psychological, social, environmental, and spiritual aspects of stress along with introducing various coping and relaxation strategies.

Questions to address for Section Five:

  1. Restate your original definition of stress.
  2. How has your perception and definition of stress changed or been reaffirmed since the beginning of the course? In your discussion, provide examples from the class and/or text. (4 pts)
  3. Summarize three insights gained from the course and describe two additional areas you will be taking into the future. (4 pts)
