Problem Review Lab 1

1.  The volume of a sphere is calculated using the equation

The radius of the earth (r) is approximately 6.38 X 106 meters.

The mass of the earth is approximately 5.97 X 1024 kg

With this information, calculate the average density of the earth.

2.  Two locomotives are approaching each other on parallel tracks. Each is traveling 26.4 m/s and they are 8.5 km apart. How long before they reach other?

3.  A car traveling at 25 m/s strikes a tree. The front end of the car compresses and the driver comes to rest after traveling 0.8 m. What was the average acceleration of the driver during the collision? If the driver has a mass of 75 kg, what was the force on the driver?

4.  A car rolls gently off a cliff (dropped). How long does it take for the car to reach 25 m/s? How far does it fall during that time?

5.  A jet fighter plane is launched from a catapult on an aircraft carrier. It reaches a speed of 42 m/s at the end of the catapult in 2.0 s. What is the length of the catapult?

6.  A baseball is thrown straight upward with a speed of 14m/s what height did it reach?

7.  What distance will be required for a car traveling at 25 mph (11.18m/s) to stop if the stopping time is 4.5 seconds? What will be the cars acceleration?

8.  How much would an 80kg person weigh on Mars where the acceleration due to gravity is 3.93 m/s2? How much would the same person weigh on the moon where the acceleration due to gravity is 1.67m/s2?

9.  In movies, a person shot with a gun is often seen to fly backwards several meters. Is this possible? Assume that the bullet has a mass of 30 grams and is traveling at 230 m/s when it hits the bad guy who has a mass of 100 kilograms. What would be the bad guy’s velocity? Is this enough to overcome his inertia and cause him to fly backwards?

10. How much time would be required to stop a 2000kg truck that is moving at 22.2 m/s if the braking force is 8,000 N?

11. On earth an astronaut and equipment weigh 1960 N. When "weightless" in space, the motionless astronaut and equipment are accelerated by a rocket pack with a force of 100N that fires for 2s. What is the final velocity of the astronaut?

12. An 80 kg man is standing on a frictionless ice surface when he throws a 4.00 kg book at 20.0 m/s. At what velocity does the man move across the ice?

13. A 30 kg shell is fired from a 2000kg cannon with a velocity of 500 m/s. What is the resulting velocity of the cannon?

14. A popular carnival ride is a spinning cylinder that presses you against the outer wall and then drops the floor out from under you. If the cylinder has a radius of 5.00 meters, how fast must it spin to give you the feeling of your weight on earth?

15. An astronaut has become separated from the shuttle and is slowly drifting away. The intrepid astronaut inventories her supplies and finds the following items: a hard boiled egg, a rubber band, a knitting needle, 4 paper clips, a can of hair spray, a picture of her college science teacher of whom she is very fond and a golf ball. Describe how she might rescue herself from this predicament.
