Resolution Honoring the Service

of Professor Edd Whetmore

*W/FAC Resolution 16-17

WHEREAS: Professor Edd Whetmore is retiring from his Professorship in the CSUDH Communications Department after 23 years of dedicated service to faculty and to the university; and

WHEREAS: Professor Whetmore served the university and its faculty and students as a Department Chair, as Chair of the Academic Senate, and as Dean of Undergraduate Studies; and

WHEREAS: Professor Whetmore has served as an informal mentor to faculty and helped foster shared governance; and

WHEREAS: Professor Whetmore led and mentored students as the advisor for The Rainbow for more than a decade; and

WHEREAS: Professor Whetmore mentored award-winning students for the California Intercollegiate Press Association competition; therefore be it

RESOLVED: The ASCSUDH specially recognize the exceptional service of our friend Professor Whetmore; and be it further

RESOLVED: The ASCSUDH holds as a model for leadership and mentorship for the institution the service of Professor Edd Whetmore; and be it further

RESOLVED: That a plaque with the content of this resolution be framed and formally presented to Professor Edd Whetmore on his next visit to campus.

Rationale:

Professor Edd Whetmore started his distinguished career at CSUDH in 1993 as an Associate Professor of Communications, earning tenure and promotion to Professor in 1996. He taught journalism, screenwriting, and other media writing and media-related courses, and was the advisor to the student newspaper—The Rainbow—for more than a decade. During that time, student journalists competed at the California Intercollegiate Press Association (CIPA), where several students took home awards. Edd served as department chair from 2000-2004, and again from 2009-2011. He also created the Communications research sequence, in which students practiced quantitative research methods on Communications-related projects. Edd served as Academic Senate Chair from 2002-2004and as a senator for many years.He was acting dean of undergraduate studies from 2004-2006.Professor Edd Whetmore has served CSUDH at all levels of leadership with exceptional distinction.
