About the Centre
Hackham West Community Centre is a ‘community managed’ organisation which services over 200o local residents each week. The Centre has a committed team of employees and volunteers who are involved in delivering more than 40 programs. The Centre’s Mission Statement is as follows:
Hackham West Community Centre is an inclusive community centre offering a diverse range of programs and services which provide opportunities for the local community to be empowered through personnel growth, learning and connections.
Organisational Relationship:
The A.T.S.I. Senior Worker works under the direction of the Program Coordinator and as part of a team to support and develop the Community and Neighbourhood Centres sector through Hackham West Community Centre, in association with the City of Onkaparinga. The position is responsible to the Board of Management, through the A.T.S.I Program Coordinator.
Summary of the Broad Purpose of this Position:
This position is funded by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet until December 2019. The projects develops and strengthens community relationships by engaging indigenous families located in the Southern Suburbs of Adelaide in educational and support programs, resulting in improved school participation under the direction of the Program Coordinator. The senior worker will assist and support the program coordinator in the development of new programs for local A.T.S.I families.
Key Accountabilities and Duties:
- In conjunction with the Program Coordinator:
- Build upon the already strong partnerships with local schools and services.
- Be actively involved in key programs within the Centre – in particular, Breakfast Club, School Holiday Activities, Families Together
- To consult continually with the local community around issues impacting on education and community engagement.
- Contribute in facilitatingdiscussions with caregivers on being the ‘first educators’ of their children.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies that contribute to the social wellbeing and educational needs of Indigenous students.
- Ensure effective and positive relationships, partnerships and participation between the school and families in decision-making by providing advocacy, support and leadership for parents.
- Develop a positive working relationship with the Aboriginal Community Education officers – (ACEO’s)
- To maintain accurate statistics and records in response to the program coordinators requirements
Special Requirements
This position is required to:
- Work flexibly as part of a team
- Participate in regular performance development reviews
- Undertake other duties as required within the scope of the SCHC& DS Award

Skills
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Indigenous people in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Indigenous people.
- A demonstrated ability to engage with Indigenous people and families in a community development process.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation with Indigenous people on matters relevant to the delivery of education services to Indigenous people.
- A sound understanding of strengths-based community development and social justice principles.
- Ability to work across sectors and maintain sustainable and effective partnerships with a wide range of agencies and/or services
Qualifications and Experience
- Experience in developing and maintaining positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families using a community development framework.
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work with a highly disadvantaged community.
- Current Senior First Aid Certificate or willing to undertake the training
- Child Safe Environment – Our community response to child abuse and neglect training is essential or willing to undertake
Knowledge
Good working knowledge of:
- Community service agencies (especially a peak body membership agency) and/or aptitude to learning quickly
- Principles of community development

- Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment
- Well developed interpersonal and communications skills
- Sound analytical and planning skills
- Flexibility and willingness to undertake other tasks when required

Training
