A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (2 units for 108 hours).

For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.

III.Course content

Developed in consultation between students and supervising faculty member.

IV.Course objectives

A.Demonstrating the basic steps used in preparing and implementing a project

B.Explaining the various factors necessary to complete a proposed project

C.Constructing a plan for researching based upon an initial proposal

D.Exhibiting the ability to work with faculty members in completing a learning
contract

E.Using problem-solving techniques in completing a project

F.Reporting or demonstrating findings in a manner that effectively

communicates with the supervising faculty member

A.Reading

Reading the text and assigned reference materials

B.Writing or problem solving or skill attainment

1.Writing assignments appropriate to the directed studies

2. Making oral presentations such as (but not limited to) speeches,

performances, and lectures.

3.Demonstrating appropriate skill, problem solving, or applications of
symbol systems required of students enrolled in this directed studies

C.Critical thinking

Supervising instructor will give assignments demonstrating critical thinking

VI.Methods of instruction may include

A.Interpersonal, one-to-one discussion with a student

B.Independent, self-directed study by a student

C. Telephone conversations

D.Computer – related methods of instruction – Alternate methods of instruction
will be utilized for the students with disabilities, as needed

VII.Methods of evaluation

A.Instructor judgment that the oral or writing learning objectives of the student have been achieved and documented

B.Regular participation in weekly individual learning conferences and/or activities

VII.Learning outcome

  1. Develop skill sets or research the topic outlined in the directed studies contract
  2. Complete a summary evaluation of skills attained or knowledge acquired during the directed studies project.
