Anthem, says Minister
Tony Banks, the sports minister, has urged the football authorities to ban the National Anthem and the Union flag from matches.

n a move that will enhance his reputation
as a maverick and
embarrass Tony Blair, Mr Banks claims a ban would help to quell nationalistic behaviour. But his comments were denounced as “deplorable” by Fifa, the games world body, and Labour MPs united with Tories in condemning the proposals.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Mr Banks said:
“National flags should not be carried into the stadium because then Sport becomes almost an extension of war.
“I don't think you should have the playing of national anthems before football matches. Why stir people up? I think you should glory in the sport, not the nationalism behind the sport.”
Fifa said last night that it would be extremely disappointed if Britain decided to end the playing of anthems. A spokesman said: Fifa would deplore such a move. There is nothing in our governing statutes that says they must be played, but it is a long-standing tradition.”
Lady Olga Maitland, the former Tory MP. called the idea ‘outrageous”. She said:
“This is a further undermining of our Britishness. It is politically correct claptrap.
‘Singing of the National Anthem is one of our great traditions. It binds people
together. This is typical of the Labour Party, bashing Britain all the time. Tony Banks may be an oddball but he is a Government minister and he represents Tony Blair. It is an indication of the Prime Minister’s thinking.”
Criticism came too from Kate Hoey, Labour MP for Vauxhall and the former educational adviser to London football clubs. “My view is that we should be proud of our country, particularly in terms of the UK where we have four different football teams,” she said.
"I see no reason why countries playing should not show the flag as visibly as possible. One of the biggest, most important things that can happen to a footballer is to be picked to play for his country. You can see with some of the teams when the National Anthem is played the fervour with which they sing it.”
Eric Hall, the football agent, said: “Tony is a mate of mine but he is talking total rubbish. It is one of the stupidest suggestions he’s made.”
It is understood that some officials at the Football Association have sympathy with Mr Bank’s sentiments about the anthem and the flag, but they believe his ideas could never be implemented.
The minister, on holiday in Greece, could not be contacted last night, but officials accused him of 5stirnng things up”. A spokesman said: “He has not
spoken to his policy advisers about this before. I think he is throwing his arguments into the fray rather than considering active legislation on the matter.”

2. Enerzijds wordt een vlag gezien als het symbool van een bepaald land. Je behoort met respect met een vlag om te gaan. Het verbranden van een vlag is dan ook een zeer beledigende actie. Strikt genomen mag een vlag zelfs niet de grond raken. Bedenk zelf een argument waarom je vlag en volkslied wel waardevol vindt. ± 65 words
3. Anderzijds voel je wel wat voor het standpunt van de heer Banks. Je vindt dat nationalisme als een potentieel gevaar moet worden gezien, met name bij internationale voetbalwedstrijden. Bovendien vind je het volkomen uit de tijd nu er een verenigd Europa aan het ontstaan is. Bedenk zelf nog een verder argument. ± 65 words
4. Samenvattend kom je tot de conclusie dat het afschaffen van nationale vlaggen en volksliederen een goede zaak zou zijn. Je bent dan ook enigszins teleurgesteld dat zoveel parlementsleden negatief op bet voorstel van dhr Banks gereageerd hebben. Juist van hen had je een evenwichtiger oordeel verwacht. ± 50 words
