This course addresses the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The language is based on themes of everyday life. Speech will be modeled by instructors who will monitor and correct for pronunciation and accent. Students will be asked to engage in simple conversations on a controlled basis using the themes presented in the curriculum. Much class time is spent practicing speech. Students will also be expected to use software available with texts to hone listening and speaking skills.
Prerequisites / NONE

Course Overview / To keep track of all assignments (workbook, Supersite, etc.), it is highly recommended that you keep this syllabus and use it to schedule your study and homework. I will do all that is possible to abide by the schedule on this syllabus so that you can use it as a guide from class to class to know what assignments are needed.
Study Tips / Besides attending class, to be successful in this course you will want to complete all the homework assignments from the workbook and Supersite. Time may also be required to practice vocabulary and grammar from the textbook. Using Spanish outside of class can be extremely helpful—conversation/study groups, watching TV in Spanish, using podcasts, reading online sources, listening to music, etc.
How the Course Fits into the Curriculum / This course counts as humanities credit. It can also be used to fulfill diversity requirements for certain programs. If you plan to transfer to a university, be sure you know the foreign language requirement for the university itself and for the specific college that you plan to enter. These requirements vary by university and the colleges within them.

Classroom Conduct / SPEAK AS MUCH SPANISH AS YOU CAN. Class time provides a very valuable opportunity to practice. As soon as you get to class, try to do all communication EN ESPAÑOL. Most instructions and many explanations will be given in Spanish. There are additional practice exercises on the textbook supersite and also on my website. Please help to maintain the classroom as a comfortable environment that facilitates participation. If you willfully or intentionally disrupt the educational process (keeping other students from learning), this is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Please do your best to be on time and keep your cell phone silent. Refer to the DMACC Student Handbook: https://go.dmacc.edu/handbook
Missed Quizzes / Since FOUR quiz scores will be dropped, there will be no make-ups for any missed quizzes. If you must miss class on a quiz day, consider it as a dropped quiz score. Please see me if you have questions regarding a specific situation.
Late Assignments / Since your text is bound together with the workbook pages, your homework for each Episodio will be reviewed on the day of the quiz. If your homework isn’t complete on the quiz day, you must arrange for me to review your work before the quiz or NO LATER THAN one class period after the quiz or once you return to class, unless other arrangements are made.
Extra Credit / There will often be bonus points on chapter quizzes and final exams. After completing 10 quizzes, you may earn up to 5 points extra credit per quiz that you complete (up to 4). Other opportunities will be announced by the instructor if available.
Other opportunities will be announced by the instructor if available. Please know that the intent of extra credit in this course is not to make up for incomplete work.
Study Expectations / Learning a foreign language successfully requires a great investment of time. You should plan on spending 1.5-2 hours per class period preparing for class and completing assignments. Coming to class prepared with practice exercises completed will give you the ideal classroom experience and allow you to focus on speaking and listening. The content of this course builds on itself throughout the semester. Consequently, it is important that students master earlier concepts, as they will become building blocks for concepts introduced later in the course. Seek extra help (tutoring, coming in to office hours, etc.) as soon as possible if you feel you are getting behind on the course material. Homework and supersite assignments, besides earning you points, are valuable practice exercises.
Class Cancellation Procedure / If class is cancelled due to my illness or any other reason, you will be contacted by DMACC e-mail with as much notice as possible.
Academic Dishonesty / If you are caught cheating or suspected of cheating on quizzes or exams in any location, you will receive a zero for the quiz or exam in question. Students have the right to appeal and may do so by following the procedures in the Academic Misconduct policy. Refer to: https://go.dmacc.edu/handbook/polprocedures/pages/academicmisconduct.aspx
