QUESTION: After High School, what’s next? During the Health and Nutrition Unit, we will spend time exploring different careers in the health field. We will take two field trips to the VCU Medical Center to explore health professionals at work. What is the primary goal of this profession? What type of education or experience is required for this profession? What about this profession is most interesting to you?
Plan: Each student will be assigned a specific health career to investigate. You will work in groups of five. Individually, you will prepare a report describing your findings on your particular health career. You will visit the VCU Medical Center to learn more about what various health professionals do on a daily basis. You will use an iPod and digital camera to capture your interactions at the Medical Center. You will then interview an health professional in your chosen career. You will summarize your findings. Then you will work with your group to prepare a directory featuring the health professionals on your healthcare team.
You will be given a list of common health professions including doctors and nurses as well as allied health professionals. You may also use resources from the Internet and the Media Center. After you have thoroughly investigated your profession your group will prepare an iMovie presentation to share with your class who is on your healthcare team based on your research.
SCHEDULE
You will be given 15 class periods to complete the research necessary to complete these tasks. We will go on two field trips during this period to the VCU Medical Center. In addition, you use resources in the Media Center , from the Internet, as well as conduct a personal interview with a health professional. To help you stay organized, there are several mini-tasks to be completed and turned in along the way. You are expected to follow the following timeline to ensure that you complete the project in the allotted time:

Project
Step 1: We will spend time over the next couple of days exploring different careers in the health field. You will be given a handout with a list of common health professions including doctors and nurses as well as allied health professionals.
Step 2: You will choose one health career from the list provided in Step 1 that might interest you. Your task is to find our as much about your selected career as possible using a variety of resources in the Media Center and the Internet. No team member is allowed to research the same profession. You must prepare a 3-page report on your specific career. Your report should answer the following questions: What does the job involve on a daily basis?, What kind of education is required to work toward entering that field?, What kind of training is needed for the job and how long will it take?, What will it cost for training for the job?, How much does this career pay?.

Step 3: You must interview a person in the selected career outside of class. This task may take several days to complete : first you will need to identify a health professional and set up an interview. To do so, you may use any health professional of your choice including those who work in your doctor’s office or one of the health professionals you met on your field trip to the VCU Medical Center. You may also contact the hospital in your community or search the phone book or the Internet.

You will make an oral presentation regarding the findings from your exploration on the profession you selected at the 5th class period.
Step 4: Now that you have selected an individual to interview, you must now with in your groups to develop a list of interview questions. These questions will help you learn more about your specific health profession. Possible questions are listed below:
· Describe the activities in a typical day in your job.
· How many hours do you work in a typical week?
· Tell me about your background, including education and experience.
· What kind of people do you work with? Who do you serve? Who are your colleagues?
· Why are you interested in this particular field?
· What do you enjoy most about your job?
· What skills—such as communication and problem solving—are most important in your field? Describe a situation in which you use these skills.
· Describe a challenging situation you’ve had in your job.
· Describe your relationship with your patients or clients.
· If I were interested in pursuing your career, what classes do you think I should be taking in high school? What extracurricular activities should I pursue?
· What other healthcare professionals do you work with?
Each group member must submit the name and profession/specialty area for the person you will interview at the 6th class period. Remember no group member is allowed to research the same profession.
Step 5: Once each group member has completed an interview, you must write a 1-2 page summary detailing what your learned. Your summary should include general information about the profession, personal anecdotes, and the characteristics necessary to work in that health field. You will work in your groups in class to compile all summaries into one report using Microsoft Word. Your report should include a title page. You will share this report with your classmates at the 11th class period.
Step 6: While at the medical center, you should visit the specified portions of the hospital and appropriate health sciences schools and use an iPod to record your thoughts and interactions with your health professional. At the conclusion of the tour, use the iPod to record an overall impression of the specific profession, how this relates to the Health and Nutrition Unit we are studying in class, and how they see the material expanding knowledge gained in the class. As they progress through the hospital, take turns using the iPod to make comments on the what you see. You may also use a digital camera to take photos.
Step 7: When you return to class, import the audio into iTunes and photos into iPhoto on in class computer.
Step 8: Using iMovie, assemble your group’s audio reflections, photos from the field trip, and any other images or audio files from the web or class materials to create a digital presentation tour reflecting upon the trip and the correlation with the topics we are discussing in class.
Step 9: You will use the 11-14th class periods to work on your iMovie presentation.
Step 10: Present your iMovie presentation to your classmates at the 10th class period. Your presentation should provide an introduction to the VCU Medical Center. In addition, you should also use audio and images to show that class who is on your healthcare team.
ASSESSMENT
You will receive three grades for this assignment. The first grade will be for your 3-page report on your selected health career. The second grade will be for your individual and and small group work with your team. The third grade will be for your iMovie presentation. The following rubrics will be used:
