Background

/ To ease traffic congestion within Dhaka City, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh seeks to develop the Expressway. The expressway has been received as part of a larger expressway network from Joydebpur to Narayanganj. The Expressway will start from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and will end at Dhaka-Chittagong Highway near Kutubkhali. The Expressway will have one interchange, one elevated link and twenty five on-off ramps. Total length of the four lane dual carriageway (2 lanes in each direction). Expressway will be approximately 19.73 kilometres. The stated purposes of the Expressway are:
- Increase traffic capacity within and around the city by improving north-south connectivity and linking important commercial and business centres and
- Reduce travel times and provide travel comfort and convenience.

Description of project

/ The Elevated Expressway will be built through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. The Elevated expressway will be 26 kilometres stretching from Hazrat Shahjalal International airport to Kutubkhali (Connection Dhaka-Chittagong Highway) to add additional capacity to the existing north-south routes as well as act as bypass in order to alleviate traffic congestion within Dhaka city.
The Expressway is proposed to have five interchanges, two end ramps and two elevated links. The approximate length of the expressway will be 24 Kilometres including mainline and the 2 elevated links with a four lane dual carriageway.
The purpose of this project is to ease traffic congestion and to increase traffic capacity within and around the city by improving north-south connectivity and linking important commercial and business centers.

Services provided

/ Mott MacDonald will perform diverse activities but not limited to:
- Review the adequacy of the geotechnical and subsoil investigations for bridge and other structures, hydrological investigation and the topographical survey.
- Site survey
- Geophysical explorations
- Laboratory tests
- Geotechnical design
- Quality control
- Slopes, embankments and cuttings
- Review the designs and drawings of the components of the Expressway structure, analyse rates, evaluate estimates and assess reports
- Review the impact of construction proposals on the social and archaeological environment
- Review the planning and design of toll plazas, toll collection system, communication facilities, emergency relief arrangements, traffic operation and safety arrangements
- Quality control during the construction phase
- Cleaning and replacement of equipment, consumables, roadside facilities, horticulture maintenance and repairs
- Laboratory tests
- Geotechnical design Quality control

- Review the designs and drawings of the components of the Expressway structure, analyse rates, evaluate estimates and assess reports

Results

/ The design phase is of the elevated expressway is going on. The first 03 monthly progress reports have been submitted out of 06 monthly progress reports for the design phase. After 06 months, the construction phase will start.
