Doyourstudentsregularlyhaveexcusesastowhytheydidn'tgettheirworkdone? This lessoncanbedonethefirstweekofclassestohelpstudentsplanarealisticschedulethat allowsthemtimetobesuccessfulinthecoursestheyenroll.

Description: Studentsworkingroupstodiscusswhichactivitiesfilltheirschedules. Theyarethen taughttodistinguishbetweenstatic-timeactivitiesandflexible-timeactivitiestohelp realizehowtoschedulebetter. Thenstudentsaredirectedtofillouttheirweekly schedules. Finallystudentsareinformedthattheyneedtoplanfor2hrsofstudyfor every1hourofclassandaskedtofitthisintotheiralreadypackedschedule. Whatwill theyneedtosacrificeiftheywanttosucceedinschool?

Objective:StudentwilllearnhowtoplanSTUDY/HWtimefortheirclassesandprioritize ATTENDINGclassviacreatingausableaweekly/monthlyschedulethatallowsfor planningotherimportantaspectsoftheirlife.

Procedure:

1.Placestudentsingroupsofthreeorfour

StageI:Introduction(3min)

3.Explaintothestudentsthattheywillnowhave3minutestocomeupwithasmanyitems astheycanthinkofthattakeuptheirtimeduringaweek. Whenyousay"Go,"theyare towritethesedownonthelargepaperthatisinthemiddleoftheirgroup. Theycanall writeatonceortheycandesignateawriterandhavetherestdirectwhatiswritten. Theyshouldskipself-maintenanceitemslike:personalhygieneandsleeping.

**Certainself-mainentanceitemsincludeasocialcomponent. Forexample,eating thatisascheduledeventbecausethereismorethanonepersoninvolved. Doinclude thistypeofevent.

4.Duringthethreeminutesencouragethemtocomeupwiththemostofanygroup. If theyappearto be stuckremindthemto thinkofthingslike: droppingchildrenoffat school,ridingbustoschool,classes,exercising,playingvideogames,...

5.Stopthegroups.

StageII:CategorizingActivities(5min):

11.Talktotheclassasawholeandseeiftheyhavesuggestionstoaddtoanyofthecategories(i.e. itemstheythoughtofthataren'tupthereyet).

StageIV:Fillingoutpersonalschedules(8min)

Explaintostudents:Thereare24hoursadayx7daysaweek=168hoursperweek. Every personmusttakecareofcertainself-maintenanceneeds(sleeping,eating,etc.) Thesetakeupa minimumof 10hoursadayx7days=70hours. Thisleavesonly98hoursof"othertime."

12.Havestudentsfillouttheiractualweeklyscheduleusingthesecategories:

*Self-maintenance(sleeping,hygiene,etc.)blockthistimeofffirst.

*Nextstartwiththestatictimeframeitems.

*Thenaddonesthatareimportantbutcanberescheduled.

*Thenflexibletimeframeitemsthathaven'tbeenadded.

*Finallynon-importantitems….

1.Makealistofallyourweeklycommitmentsfortheterm. Includeclasses,homework,reading, studying,work,regularmeetings,extracurricularactivities,evenfamilyobligationssuchaslaundry, regularworkouts,groceryshopping,etc.

2.Estimatethetimeneededforeachitemonthelist. Alsomakeanoteofhowoftenyouwillneedto doeachitem.

3.InHW#1,partAyouareaskedtoblockoutatypicalweekontheschedulegridgiven. Startwith itemswithfixedtimeslotslikeclassesandwork.

4.Next,includetheitemsonyourlistwithflexibletimeslots. Thinkcarefullyabouthowbestto schedulesomeitemssuchasstudytime.

5.Don'tfillupeverytimeslotontheschedule. Rememberthatyouneedtoallowtimeforeating, sleepingandrelaxing! Youshouldalsoallowalittleextratimefortheunexpected.

6.Ifyoufindthatyourweeklyscheduleistoofullforyoutohandle,youmayneedtomakesome changesinyourworkload,classload,orinotherareasofyourlife. Youmaywanttotalktoyour advisor,managerorsupervisoratwork,orsomeoneattheLAHCcounselingcenterforhelpwith suchdecisions.
