History of the highly competitive MISP
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic. The program was launched in the fall of 2006; this is the seventh year of the program.
MISP was developed by the Mayo Clinic and John Meslow, a retired Medtronic executive, with support from the Medtronic Foundation, Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property, and the MN Private College Council. The program has three main objectives: (1) to assist Mayo's Office of Intellectual Property in the evaluation of new product submissions by Mayo inventors, (2) to provide research internship opportunities for undergraduate science and business students, and (3) to provide leadership development and research opportunities for MBA students.
MISP at Augsburg College
Teams consist of an MBA student, 2 undergraduate science students, 2 undergraduate business/economics students and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. Teams will work together to understand the science and applications of the projects or innovations and analyze the market potential. The end result of the team investigation will be a business plan and final presentation at Mayo Clinic.
Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1000 and the team will have some funds to pay for copies, postage, and other administrative costs. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March. NOTE: Team members MUST attend their orientation (either October 28th or 30th) and final presentation at Mayo for the entire day (both orientation and presentations are full-day).

Application Procedure
If you are interested in applying, submit a completed application, essay, resume, and unofficial transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity at by 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 25th. A group of faculty members will review the applications and make selections by as soon as possible. If you are selected to become a team member, you will have to sign a confidentiality agreement with Mayo Clinic before we can give you more information about the teams and the projects.

Time Commitment
Because of the nature of the project, it is difficult to identify exactly how many hours it will entail and what your specific tasks will be. The time commitment will be considerable, and previous participants report having spent hundreds of hours on the project and presentation.
