Adjustment
NOTEThe parking brake shoes used in the drum-in-hat parking brake system do not automatically adjust to compensate for brake shoe lining wear. Therefore, it is necessary to manually adjust the parking brake shoes.
- Excessive travel of the parking brake lever
- Installation of new parking brake shoes
- Performing any service which may effect the location of the parking brake shoes
- Make sure the parking brake lever is fully released.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the rubber plug from the adjusting hole in the brake shoe backing plate on both sides of the vehicle.
- For the driver’s side (left) adjustment procedure, perform the following:
- Insert a medium sized screwdriver through the adjustment hole in the backing plate. Place the screwdriver against the star wheel on the parking brake shoe adjuster mechanism.
- Use the screwdriver to rotate the star wheel downward, until a slight drag is felt when turning the rear wheel.
- Then, use the screwdriver to rotate the star wheel upward just until the rear wheel can be rotated with no parking brake shoe drag.
- From the point where there is no more drag, rotate the star wheel upward a maximum of 2 additional clicks. The parking brake shoe-to-drum clearance is now properly adjusted.
- For the passenger’s side (right) adjustment procedure, perform the following:
- Insert a medium sized screwdriver through the adjustment hole in the backing plate. Place the screwdriver against the star wheel on the parking brake shoe adjuster mechanism.
- Use the screwdriver to rotate the star wheel upward, until a slight drag is felt when turning the rear wheel.
- Then, use the screwdriver to rotate the star wheel downward just until the rear wheel can be rotated with no parking brake shoe drag.
- From the point where there is no more drag, rotate the star wheel downward a maximum of 2 additional clicks. The parking brake shoe-to-drum clearance is now properly adjusted.
- Install the rubber plug into the adjusting hole on the brake shoe backing plate on both sides of the vehicle.
- Lower the vehicle far enough to get to the parking brake lever, without the rear tires touching the ground.
- Fully apply and release the parking brakes 2 times after adjusting the parking brake shoes. Then, rotate both rear wheels to be sure the parking brake shoes do not drag on the brake drum following the operation and release of the parking brake.
