The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

As the earthly priesthood was nailed to the cross, the way was open for Yahushua to enter upon His priestly ministry in heaven to officiate in man's behalf in the sanctuary above.

To learn how the sanctuary in heaven runs we need to study the sanctuary on earth.

Levitical Services

1. What was the first sacred service introduced among the Israelites?

“And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to Yahuwah throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.” Exodus 12:14–20.

Answer: The Passover service.

NOTE: “The Passover was followed by the seven days' feast of unleavened bread. On the second day of the feast, the first fruits of the year's harvest, a sheaf of barley, was presented before [Yahuwah]. All the ceremonies of the feast were types of the work of [Yahushua]. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt was an object lesson of redemption, which the Passover was intended to keep in memory. The slain lamb, the unleavened bread, the sheaf of first fruits, represented the Saviour.” The Desire of Ages, page 77.

2. Which homes were assured of deliverance from death?

“And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.” “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12:7, 13.

Answer: Homes that applied the blood on the two side posts and on the upper door post of their houses.

NOTE: “The Passover was to be both commemorative and typical, not only pointing back to the deliverance from Egypt, but forward to the greater deliverance which [Yahushua] was to accomplish in freeing His people from the bondage of sin. The sacrificial lamb represents the Lamb of [Yahuwah], in whom is our only hope of salvation. Says the apostle, [Yahushua] our Passover is sacrificed for us. 1 Corinthians 5:7. It was not enough that the paschal lamb be slain; its blood must be sprinkled upon the doorposts; so the merits of [Yahushua's] blood must be applied to the soul. We must believe, not only that He died for the world, but that He died for us individually. We must appropriate to ourselves the virtue of the atoning sacrifice.” Patriarchs and Prophets, page 277.

3. What strict prohibition did Yahuwah make regarding blood?

“And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.” Leviticus 17:10–14.

Answer: That blood should not be eaten.

NOTE: From the earliest times, man was prohibited from eating blood. When permission was given for man to eat flesh, the command was imperative that blood should not be eaten. ‘Flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.’ Genesis 9:4. Repeatedly Israel was forbidden the eating of blood. ‘Ye shall not eat anything with the blood.’ Leviticus 19:26. ‘Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.’ The eating of blood was so great a sin that the record states: ‘Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.’ Leviticus 7:27.…To this day the orthodox Jew refuses to eat any flesh with the blood.…The instruction to refrain from the eating of blood is carried over into the New Testament. The first general council convened by the apostles in Jerusalem commanded all the Christian churches to abstain from eating blood. Acts 15:20. This command was reinforced by the Holy Ghost. Verse 28. The precious blood of the Son of [Yahuwah], which was spilled in Gethsemane and shed on Calvary, made atonement for the soul of man. The blood of [Yahuwah’s] Son cleanseth from all sin. [Yahuwah] desired that man should recognize the purpose of the blood. F. C. Gilbert, Messiah in His Sanctuary, 17, 18.

4. What is necessary for the remission of sins?

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” Hebrews 9:22.

Answer: Blood is necessary for the remission of sins. This has a special meaning for us. If it was necessary in ancient times for the unclean to be purified by the blood of sprinkling, how essential for those living in the perils of the last days, and exposed to the temptations of Satan, to have the blood of the Anointed applied to their hearts daily. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of the Anointed, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to Yahuwah, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living Eloah? Hebrews 9:13, 14.

5. What was Moses shown while he was on Mount Sinai with Yahuwah?

“And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. . . . And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.” “And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was shewed thee in the mount.” “Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they make it.” “And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which Yahuwah had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick.” Exodus 25:8, 9, 40; 26:30; 27:8; Numbers 8:4.

Answer: The heavenly sanctuary.

NOTE: “Turning again to the book of Hebrews, the seekers for truth found that the existence of a second, or new-covenant sanctuary, was implied in the words of Paul already quoted: 'Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.' And the use of the word 'also' intimates that Paul has before made mention of this sanctuary. Turning back to the beginning of the previous chapter, they read: 'Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a Minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Master pitched, and not man.' Hebrews 8:1, 2.

Here is revealed the sanctuary of the new covenant. The sanctuary of the first covenant was pitched by man, built by Moses; this is pitched by Yahuwah, not by man. In that sanctuary the earthly priests performed their service; in this, Yahushua, our great High Priest, ministers at Yahuwah's right hand. One sanctuary was on earth, the other is in heaven.

Further, the tabernacle built by Moses was made after a pattern. Yahuwah directed him: 'According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. And again the charge was given, Look that thou make them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount.' Exodus 25:9, 40. And Paul says that the first tabernacle 'was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices;' that its holy places were 'patterns of things in the heavens;' that the priests who offered gifts according to the law served 'unto the example and shadow of heavenly things,' and that '[the Anointed] is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of [Yahuwah] for us.' Hebrews 9:9, 23; 8:5; 9:24.” The Great Controversy, page 413.

6. How much of the design for the sanctuary was shown to Moses by Yahuwah?

“Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom Yahuwah put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Yahuwah had commanded.” “Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of Yahuwah when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.” Exodus 36:1; Hebrews 8:5.

Answer: All manner of work for the service of the sanctuary.

NOTE: "It was [Yahushua] who planned the arrangement for the first earthly tabernacle. He gave every specification in regard to the building of Solomon’s temple. The One who in His earthly life worked as a carpenter in the village of Nazareth was the heavenly architect who marked out the plan for the sacred building where His name was to be honored." Christ’s Object Lessons, page 349.

7. What was the purpose of the sanctuary and its symbols?

“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them.” Hebrews 4:2.

Answer: The gospel of Yahushua reflects glory upon the Jewish age. It sheds light upon the whole Jewish economy, and gives significance to the ceremonial law. The tabernacle, or temple, of Yahuwah on earth was a pattern of the original in Heaven. All the ceremonies of the Jewish law were prophetic, typical of mysteries in the plan of redemption. The rites and ceremonies of the law were given by Yahushua Himself, who, enshrouded in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, was the leader of the hosts of Israel; and this law should be treated with great respect, for it is sacred. Paul presented it before the Jews in its true position and value, showing its place in the plan of redemption and its relation to the work of Yahushua; and the great apostle pronounces this law glorious, worthy of its divine Originator.

Yahushua Becomes A Priest

8. How does Paul show that the sanctuary prefigures even the saving work of Yahushua in heaven?

“Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For the Anointed is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Yahuwah for us.” Hebrews 9:21–24.
