Defensible Use of Force on the Bus
9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

An angry parent boards your bus and you fear you or your students may be assaulted! You are driving your bus when you are suddenly assaulted by a student! You see a male approaching your bus with a gun in his hand after your students have boarded! What can you do in each of these situations? Jesus will lay out a very clear foundation of what your rights are as a driver when it comes to defending yourself or your students while operating your bus. Jesus’ background as a Master Defensive Tactics Instructor for law enforcement personnel and as an expert witness in use of force issues allows him to answer any “What if?” questions you may have! Jesus will also provide an electronic template for any transportation agency that can be used for documentation when a use of force situation occurs. Prepare for Reality!

Breaking Up Fights on the Bus/Responding to Weapons on the Bus

1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

There have recently been numerous incidents where drivers have been negatively criticized for either using too much force when breaking up a fight on a bus or not using any force at all. It seems like it’s almost impossible to make the right decision for fear of losing your job or being negatively viewed by the general public. Jesus will walk you through what your requirements actually are and your responsibilities in securing your bus during a fight intervention. You will learn how not to be an “Oreo cookie”, why you should never approach combatants from behind and understand the civil liability involved when you use force on another person. (Participants will need to have attended the Defensible Use of Force on the Bus Training prior to attending this session). Jesus will also provide recommendations of how to respond if you notice someone boarding your bus with a weapon that they have not displayed yet. Coded alert to dispatch or not? Do you continue moving the bus to the next stop? Do you speak directly with 911? It’s time these and other safety concerns were answered for our Pupil Transporters in a very real way as these are the same questions that thousands of drivers across the country are asking and deserve an answer to! It’s time to conduct more Reality Checks about your safety and this session will provide that.
