U.S. History and English III Final Research Project

I.  Focus – The English III research process will center on an interpretative, supported opinion made by the student in regard to a controversial event/person/invention that had great significance in American history from 1877‐1980. Each student’s topic must be unique and not duplicated. The broader the topic the better. The research project is an academic writing requirement that best prepares students for the writing demands of college and professional careers.

II.  Dates – Time is at a premium for this assignment, therefore the following dates are firm. The various parts of this research paper must be submitted on the set dates during class time. Late work will not be accepted. This means that you will either receive 100% (on time and complete) or 0%.

a.  Research topic approval: Friday, December 2, 2016

b.  Research Paper Construction Guide due: Wednesday, December 7, 2016

c.  Works Cited page due: Friday, December 9, 2016

d.  Rough draft (word processed) due: Monday, December 12, 2016

e.  Final draft due: Thursday, December 15, 2016

III.  Sources – Students’ research papers will:

a.  Include at least 4 cited sources/examples, all of which will be

i.  Primary sources from the web (only from a .edu, .gov, or .mil website)

ii.  In PDF format, printed, and included in the final packet (Students may not cite or incorporate sources from non-credible sources such as Wikipedia, BrainyQuote, Google, etc.)

*Students may use his or her textbook and 3 primary web sources if he or she chooses to do so.

IV.  Grading - This research project will incorporate several grades:

a.  Thesis map & topic approval: 100 point quiz grade

b.  Research Paper Construction Guide: 100 point quiz grade

c.  Works Cited Page: 100 point quiz grade

d.  Rough draft (word processed): 100 point quiz grade

e.  Peer edit (conducted in class): 100 point quiz grade

f.  Final draft: 100 point TEST grade

V.  Format – Student research papers will follow MLA format. This is the same format we have been using for essays all semester.

VI.  Intent - The intent of this project is to assist students in recovering their grade in English III, as well as to provide them an opportunity to construct a tangible example for future academic writing.
