SHOCON: THE 2008 REGIONAL
BRIEFING
#5
August 23, 2008 Edition
Greetings to all Region X Modelers and friends!
As Shocon: THE 2008 Regional draws closer you will be getting more information about the event. As always, check out the website at www.nusma.org to get a complete update of sponsors, rules, categories and so forth. To give you some highlights:
I. FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIAL UPDATE:
IMPORTANT: THE VENUE IS THE SAME BUT THE TIME IS DIFFERENT!!
The Friday night social will be at the Golden Corral in Layton, Utah which is off Angel Street off Antelope Drive. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. You will enjoy camaraderie and a number of models to be auctioned off. It is my understanding that GreatModels Webstore has donated some of the models and we appreciate their participation. Remember to show up early, at 5:30 for dinner!!!
II. Rules
Remember that Prior First place/Gold winners of any Shocon or Gathering are excluded from competition as per the usual exclusion rule. Also, since this is a Regional, any models that have won any award at a prior Regional or National Contest (1st, 2nd or 3rd or OOB or Special Award are also excluded! However, if your model won first or any other award at the recent SLC ’08 it doesn’t matter; those models are still eligible.
III. Host Hotel
Remember that the Host Hotel for the 2008 Region X Convention is the Ogden Marriott, which is within walking distance of Union Station. At this point you have missed the deadline to sign up for the negotiated rate but this may still be your best bet. So call them for reservations at 1-800-627-7468 or locally at 801-627-1190. The Hotel address is 247 24th Street.
IV. Make and Take
I have received the models for the Make N Take so that event will be fun for the kids. The models are Polar Lights Batmobiles. We will need some help from those of you that do not want to judge as the Make and Take will take place during judging. Keep in mind that the Make and Take is one of the hooks that excites the newspapers so they give our event some publicity!! I will be sending blurbs to both Salt Lake Papers and Ogden and Logan papers this week to generate publiciaty and will mention the Make and Take as it seems to be the activity the newspapers like to promote.
V. Vendors area
I am not in charge of Vendors but I understand there will be a good selection this time. Those that have committed to participate so far include:
Rob Humphrey
Alleyn Kinney of MRS/Douglas Models
Earl’s Hobby Hangar
C.S. Bailey Studios
Avalon Books and Hobbies from Arizona
Dave Chevalier
Bill Engar
There will be more vendors sign up before we are through so be sure to bring your cash and support them!
VI. Publicity
My address lists are woefully out of date so I will not be sending letters of invitation to local modelers who are not in any clubs so spread the word. Brochures are in the main hobby shops but it never hurts to tell your friends about the event. After all, the more, the merrier!!
