· Point your browser to https://mdid.newpaltz.edu
Just login using your regular New Paltz userid and password—
The splash page gives you some hints about browsing the collection, but here are some more fleshed out instructions:
· Click on Search from the menu at left
o Check the box for the SUNY New Paltz Art History Slide Collection before you begin. For now, click only this one collection to search.
o You might begin with a keyword search by entering a term in the “search for keyword” field
o When performing a keyword search, or using a keyword as a filter if you need to refine the results of a search, it helps to use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard after a root word or even the first few (3+) characters of a word or name you may not remember how to spell, (eg. drawing* finds drawing and drawings).
o A tilde (~) after a word will find word forms, as well as words that include accent marks (Cezanne~ will find both Cezanne and Cézanne-with or without the accent)
· Once you have a results set of thumbnails from your search, view a larger image of the thumb by clicking it. A viewer window will open up a larger, zoomable image and all the data attached to the image. Close the window when you are done viewing the larger image.
· Download an image by clicking on the floppy disk icon below each thumb. I have set the database to download the largest available .jpg for faculty users.
· Sample search, for American artist, Terry Winters:
o Enter 'winters' in *search for keyword* field. You will get 40 hits
o Hints:
§ Set your search page to show results 10, 25 or 50 records at a time.
§ Thumbnail images are sorted by a field you select. Select a field, such as Object Type, to help sort images. For example, we have three types of Terry Winters images: drawings, paintings and prints. A sort on Object Type lists them alphabetically by Object Type
§ View all the thumbs more compactly when you select "no" information from one of the dropdown lists at the top of the "Search Results" page.
§ Filter your results using a certain term, such as a particular object term (eg. “photogravure”-7 hits) or image title word (eg. "fungus"-1 hit) Remember to click the floppy disk icon to download an image to your computer.
· Browse, by clicking on it from the menu on the left
· Select SUNY New Paltz Art History Slide Collection from the Collection drop down list.
· Select a Field to Browse through.
o Try Creator Sort. This has artists listed last name first.
o Also try the Classification Field which corresponds to the Classification typed on the bottom label of each slide in the Slide Library.
§ For example, Modern French Painting gets you all the heavy hitters in 19th and 20th Century French Painting.
§ Then back on the Search Results page, you can use a filter (keyword) to narrow your results to a single artist.
