Medical Services
Purpose: The intent of the following policy is to describe the guiding principles utilized by CDS for the provision of emergency medical procedures.
Policy: It is the policy of CDS to have written policies to guide employees in providing emergency medical services to all participants.
Procedure and/or Process:
Emergency Medical Services: All direct service staff are trained in Emergency First Aid and CPR. Employees are advised to follow the emergency procedures guidelines of the Red Cross.
1) General Emergency Procedures:
a) Initiate any emergency first aid procedures necessary.
b) Contact parent/guardian or family member, if deemed appropriate.
c) Contact Program Coordinator, or designee, as appropriate.
d) If hospital treatment is needed, participant’s parent/guardian or family member should arrange transportation. Staff should not transport. In an emergency, call rescue 911 to transport.
e) Further Information may be attained by reviewing the Onsite First Aid and Emergency Care Policy (P-1166) in the Safety Section of the CDS Manual on the Intranet
2) Severe Emergency Procedures:
a) Do not move participant; initiate any emergency first aid.
b) Call 911 for assistance
c) Contact parent/guardian or family member, if deemed necessary.
d) Contact Program Coordinator, or designee and Chief Operations Officer and Chief Executive Officer.
3) Medications
a) The State Approval Regarding Prescription Medication section of the rule is not applicable to CDS.
b) All medication taken by the participant is documented in the participant’s file on the screening form or the medical history form.
4) Participants Posing Danger to Self, Others or Community
a) Make an assessment to determine the degree of danger.
b) Notify local law enforcement, if appropriate.
c) Notify parent/guardian or family member, if deemed necessary.
d) Consult Program Coordinator, Chief Operations Officer and Chief Executive Director, Crisis Center, and /or the Crisis Stabilization Unit.
5) Employees who Handle First Aid Situations
a) Follow the Infection Control Policy (P-1038) and the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure and Control Program (P-1039) located in the Safety Section of the CDS Manual on the Intranet.
b) In an event that the parent/guardian of a child cannot be contacted or refuses to provide medical treatment, a medical neglect report shall be made to the abuse registry.
c) A basic First Aid Kit is maintained at each site.
