RESEARCH, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE
PREAMBLE
Vision 2030 and the Constitution of Kenya underscores the generation of technologies and management of a knowledge-based economy and the need to raise productivity and efficiency in all sectors of national development. Further, Kenya’s capacity to effectively compete in the global market depends on the ability of its people to innovate and apply the relevant technology for industrial growth and development. This cannot be achieved without embracing Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I), which is a critical ingredient for industrialization and sustainable development.
OBJECTIVES OF THE WEEK
The specific objectives will be to:
i. show-case Kenya’s achievements and breakthroughs in ST&I;
ii. appraise the public on the development and achievement of ST&I in Kenya;
iii. create public awareness and popularize ST&I;
iv. enhance the public understanding on the benefits of scientific inventions and innovation;
v. provide a platform for enhancing technology transfer; and
vi. celebrate, recognize and reward outstanding scientists and innovators.
The event will comprise keynote addresses; conference paper and poster presentations; panel discussions; exhibition of inventions and innovations; and robotic contest.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from scholars, academicians, policy makers, scientists, entrepreneurs, innovators, Technical and Vocational Training Institutions (TVET), research and development personnel to participate and make presentations and exhibitions under the following five sub-themes (for details see website).
Subtheme 1: Climate Change and Health
Subtheme 2: Indigenous Knowledge and Food Security;
Subtheme 3: Social Sciences and Sustainable Co-existence;
Subtheme 4: Drought and Flood Preparedness; and
Subtheme 5: Climate Change and Energy
The beneficiaries of National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) Research Endowment Grants will be expected to present their research/project findings.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
The expected output of the Science Week is documentation of the main trends in the implementation of Kenya Vision 2030; policy briefs; and an inventory of innovations.
