Mastering the Bays

- a cross curricular stage 5-6urban design workshop to celebrate World Town Planning Day

Mastering the Bays is a full day urban design workshop involving students:

  • Learning about design principles and careers associated with town planning
  • Learning aboutthe process of master planning large scale urban redevelopment precincts
  • Taking part in a follow up competition to sustainably master plan one area withinThe Bays precinct

During the workshop students will:

  • Visit theBarangarooDelivery Authority Display Centre to learn about careers paths in Urban planning and master planning large urban siteslike the White Bay Urban Transformation Precinct
  • Participate in a fieldtour by ferry around ‘The Bays’ precinct
  • Visit the City of Sydney planning department (including viewing the city planning model) to learn about town planning principles and career options in town planning
  • Follow up urban design competition–students will also participate in a follow up urban design competition at school, workingas a design team,to develop a detailed concept proposal for one area within ‘TheBays’precinct. The winning team will receive $200and the runner up $100.

The workshop and competition aims to strengthen student’s knowledge, skills and understanding about the cross curriculum ‘Sustainability’ priority through an understanding of sustainable design principles, enrich syllabus content in Stage 5 & 6Geography and Design & Technology, as well as supporting the Work and Enterprise‘Learning across the curriculum’ area.

Meeting Place?Barangaroo Delivery Authority (BDA),Level 21, 201 Kent St Sydney.The closest railway station is Wynyard.BDA is a short walk from the station.

Cost: $10.00 per student.Students should wear full school uniform. Opportunities will be provided for students to buy recess and lunch. Students should bring any medication required and appropriate equipment for the weather eg sun hats, wet weather gear etc.

Once your school’s application to attend has been received, an acceptance will be sent, together with a journal for payment and a team list fax-back, a student photo permission note and a Risk Assessment Pro Forma for you to prepare your Risk Assessment.

Follow-Up Urban Design Competition

Participation in the workshop involves students engaging in the Mastering the Bay’sUrban Design Competition. Students may work in urban planning teams (of up to 4) to master plan one area within the White Bay Urban Transformation Precinct. The teams can use skills in ICT, Design & Technology, Geography and Mathematics to produce their concepts for the site. Thecompetition uses an integrated curriculum approach to support the DOEEnvironmental Education Policy, and promotes the Urban Design Protocol’s for Australian cities. Student’s submissions will be judged by a panel of planning and sustainability experts.
