The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade invites applications for internships in its Human Rights Unit in Dublin and in the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in Geneva. I would be grateful if you could bring this notice to the attention of your students and alumni.
The promotion and protection of human rights are accorded a high priority in Irish foreign policy. The Human Rights Unit coordinates policy and helps ensure that human rights concerns are given full expression in all areas of the Government’s foreign policy. There are three positions available at HQ in Dublin, all are for a period of eleven months; one position will commence in July 2013, with the other two commencing in September 2013.A number of positions will be available in Geneva. A shortlist of suitable candidates will be established from which the internship positions will be filled.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications/experience:
· A first or second class honours degree in Law, International Relations, Human Rights, Politics or another relevant discipline is required.
· A good knowledge, academic or practical, of Human Rights Law is highly desirable.
· A strong interest in human rights and current affairs is desirable.
· Previous work experience with governmental, international or non-governmental organisations working in the field of Human Rights would also be an advantage.
· Strong research skills and the ability to present factual information effectively, both orally and in writing are essential.
· Flexibility, initiative, good judgement, the ability to work with a team and good computer skills are essential also.
· Proficiency in the French language, while not essential, is desirable.

Applications can be submitted by post or by e-mail. Applications received after the closing date for applications will not be considered. Selection will be on the basis of a competitive interview. If a large number of applications is received, candidates will be short listed for interview on the basis of information supplied in their application. Interviews will take place in Dublin the week beginning Monday 29 April 2013.
The pay rate applicable to all interns is that of the first point on the Executive Officer standard scale. There is no entitlement to Civil Service status.
Citizens of non-European Economic Area (EEA) States are not eligible to compete. The EEA consists of the member states of the European Union along with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Special conditions may apply to citizens of Bulgaria and Romania with regards their eligibility to be employed and work in Ireand.
