Proposed Outline for Final Report
Phase A of the MicroMAPS Project.
Abstract:
• NASA Langley Research Center is collaborating with the Virginia Space Grant
Consortium on a project to create a spaceborne mission for the MicroMAPS instrument. By
teaming with the VSGC, Langley can take advantage of expertise both at LaRC and within the
university community to test, modify, calibrate, and fly the MicroMAPS instrument.
• The MicroMAPS (MeasurementofAirPollution fromSpace) instrument is a nadir viewing,
optical instrument that compares gases in the atmosphere to known gas samples in a Gas Filter
Correlated Radiometer. This technique permits the instrument to detect and quantify that gas
in the volume of atmosphere that the instrument is viewing. MicroMAPS is calibrated to
monitor carbon monoxide in the earth’s atmosphere. It was developed and built for the Clark
spacecraft as part of the Small Spacecraft Technology Initiative (1995–1997). The Clark
spacecraft mission was cancelled when the project suffered from cost overruns and schedule
delays related to the spacecraft.
• Work on the MicroMAPS project is being performed by students from: Old Dominion
University, the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
• This final report for Phase A of the project summarizes the results of the students’ work in
2001-2002 and presents recommendations for the implementation of a directed approach for
the launch and utilization of the MicroMAPS instrument.
Core:
• Summaries of all reports together with a discussion of the implications for program
development.
• Additional considerations that can affect the conclusions and/or the recommendations.
• Conclusions (from the reports)and Recommendations (for what should be included in the
Proposal for next year, including preliminary budgets.)
