Lab 8. FORMING AND NAMING IONIC COMPOUNDS EXPERIMENT
Objective- Observe when ionic substance react to form a product? Write the names and formulas for these products. This experiment will provide you with visual examples of many, many ionic compounds and the opportunity to see the precipitates form in small-size samples. The mixing is done in well plate. This simple procedure and the colorful outcomes make formula-writing more directly connected to real chemical reactions.
Introduction: When ionic compounds dissolve in water, they break apart into ions. These ions move about among the water molecules bumping into other ions and molecules in the solution. When two ionic solutions are mixed, several things can happen. In this experiment, you will have an opportunity to mix various ionic compounds in solution. Some ions will stay dissolved and uncombined in solution even when they are mixed with other ions. We call these ions soluble. When many other ions are mixed, the form compounds which appear as cloudy or grainy precipitates. These substances are called insoluble.

SAFETY: Wear safety goggles, lab aprons, close-toed shoes and nitrile gloves at all times in the laboratory. Dispose all chemicals from the well plate in the waste container in the hood. Clean your well plate thoroughly before putting it away. Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab.
Prelab: Provide the chemical formulas for the reagent solutions that will provide the cations and some anions. Then, list either the cation or anion (element symbol and charge) where indicated.

PROCEDURE
- Obtain a clean dry well plate and place it on a piece of white paper.
- Identify the two solutions that you will be mixing in your well plate. (Double check to ensure that you have selected the correct solutions.
- In each well, place 3-5 drops of each solution corresponding to the box on the table.
- Mix if needed with a toothpick and record your observations on your Data Table A.
- Record any color change
- Record if a precipitate forms using “PPT” for precipitate
- Describe each precipitate as milky, grainy, cloudy, or gelatinous
- If no reaction occurred, mark the box with “NR” to indicate that no reaction has taken place.
- Continue mixing and recording your observations until the entire data table is completed.
- Dispose all chemicals from the well plate in the waste container in the hood.
- Clean your well plate thoroughly before putting it away.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab
Post lab questions:
For the following pairs of ions, write the formula and the STOCK names of the compound that you would expect them to form. For iron, include the common name also. (Note, Stock, systematic, or IUPAC utilizes Roman numerals to indicate the type of ion present. The common naming system uses the Latin root and ic or ous as an ending.)
1. barium and hydroxide
2. cobalt (III) and phosphate
3. iron (II) and sulfate (stock)
iron (II) and sulfate (common)______
5. platinum (II) and bromide ion
6. platinum (II) and carbonate ion
7. platinum (IV) and bromide ion
8. platinum (IV) and carbonate ion
- Complete tables B and C. Note, Oxalate is C2O42-
