SARA Coach Coordinator

Annual Report

SARA AGM, April 27, 2010

For the 2009/10 season the coach coordinator position primary responsibilities included; coach selection, coach training/certification and issue management. The coach coordinator was involved with the various Division coordinators and Player/Coach Development Coordinator in selecting qualified candidates for all SARA teams with the exception of the Open teams. There was a good mixture of new and experienced coaches for the U8, U10 and U 12 division teams. Also, for this past season it was necessary to interview coach candidates for U12 coaching position as there were more qualified candidates than positions. A preliminary draft of Coach Selection Criteria has been developed (see attached) and will be formally presented to the new Board and Executive for approval. The Coach Selection Criteria will be posted on the SARA website and available for review by all interested parties.

Coach training/certification this past season focused on hosting three coaching clinics. SARA hosted a CSI, CIR and Gradation courses in October and November. All three courses were fully booked with approximately 25 individuals per session attending. At this point most experienced coaches (U 12 Division and up) have achieved the required certifications to participate in provincials. Obtaining required certifications and tracking current certifications for SARA coaches remains a priority, ensuring that teams which qualify for provincials are not hindered by the certification process. The administration required to host (participant registration and logistics) requires significant time commitment. Prior to hosting clinics in 2010 alternatives to the current system (i.e. is on-line registration possible) need to arranged. September/October is an extremely busy period for the ringette season and the additional administration tasks currently associated with hosting clinics is difficult to manage.

Preliminary discussions with Lorrie Horn have occurred regarding the development of a coach program in SARA. A formal proposal will be developed in conjunction with Lorrie Horn and presented to the SARA board for discussion and decision. I have also had discussion with Maria Thompson form Bellerose High School regarding a coach mentorship component in the Ringette Academy Program. It is hoped that the opportunities will involve having academy participants involved in junior coaching as well as SARA coaching participating in academy on-ice session. More to come…

There were a few minor incidents involving SARA coaches which required attention this past season. For the most part SARA coaches exhibited tremendous class and showed respect for their players, opponents and referees. As coach coordinator, my single greatest concern is ensuring our coaches treat the young refs with respect. More education is needed to heighten awareness how our behavior on the bench has negative impacts on our young refs. This will become more of a focus as the coach training and mentoring program is developed. Approximately 50 coach evaluations were submitted and the vast majority of the evaluations suggest our coaches are doing a tremendous job and their efforts are truly appreciated by members of the association.

Respectfully submitted

Rob Corrigan

SARA Coach Coordinator
