Board of Directors Meeting Summary for Monday, September 10, 2012

Regular Final Meeting of the Red Oak Directors for 2011 - 2012

All of the Red Oak Directors were present for the final meeting of the Board’s work year, 2011 – 2012. President Lee Fellers was joined at the meeting by Vice-President Warren Hayes and Directors Paul Griffen, Bill Drey, and Kathy Walker. At this meeting the Directors recognized the gifts of time and effort provided by the Red Oak Kiwanis Club to assist students with basic school needs. The Red Oak Kiwanis Club is led by President Dave Jennings. The Board of Directors graciously accepted a gift from Dr. William and Christie Butz targeted to the vocal and instrumental departments of Red Oak High and Middle School.

Summary: Board of Directors’ Actions and Discussions . . .

Ø  The Directors approved personnel recommendations from the transportation department for the employment of Patti Jipsen and Natalie Mannen as regular route drivers and Bob Peterson as a substitute driver.

Ø  Approval was granted by the Directors for the development and implementation of a Substitute Teacher Training Class.

Ø  The Directors authorized the assignment of district domain email addresses for each member of the Board to be the official contact location in communication for district business and community contact.

Ø  The Directors concluded the business of Fiscal Year 2012 and adjourned.

Ø  The first organizational meeting of Fiscal Year 2013 was convened by Director Lee Fellers. The election of officers took place with a unanimous ballot cast for Lee Fellers as Board President and Warren Hayes as Board Vice-President. Each was sworn into office by Board Secretary Shirley Maxwell.

Ø  Annual appointments were made as follows:

§  Multi-Cultural/Gender Fair Compliance Officer and Equity Officer: Superintendent Terry Schmidt with Assistant Officers Gayle Allensworth, Barb Sims, Nate Perrien, and Jedd Sherman.

§  District Homeless Liaison Officer: High School Guidance Officer John Brabec with assistance from support staff Rita Leinen and Crystal Berkey to do liaison work in 2012 – 2013.

§  District Truancy Officers: All building administrators as truancy officers for the 2012 - 2013 school year with assistance from Student Support Coordinator Michael Moran.

§  Level I and Level II Investigators: Red Oak Assistant Police Chief Steve Cleland as the Level I Investigator and Red Oak Police Chief Drue Powers as the Level II Investigator.

§  District Asbestos Coordinator: Maintenance Director Pete Wemhoff as the district’s asbestos coordinator.

§  Board Secretary: Business Manager Shirley Maxwell as the Board Secretary

§  Financial institutions as depositories and deposit maximum amounts:

*Houghton State Bank 116 Coolbaugh St, Red Oak $10,000,000

Great Western Bank 2100 Commerce Dr, Red Oak $5,000,000

*Houghton State Bank continues as the district primary financial institution

§  Official School District Newspaper: The Red Oak Express as the district’s official newspaper for fiscal year 2013.

§  Board of Directors and Red Oak Community School District Legal Counsel: The Swanson Law Firm of Red Oak and Rick Engel of Des Moines as legal counsel for fiscal year 2013.

§  Board of Directors Meeting Dates for fiscal year 2013: All meetings would begin at 6:00 pm unless otherwise noted: 9.10, 9.24, 10.8, 10.22, 11.12, 11.19, 12.10, 1.14, 1.28, 2.11, 2.25, 3.11, 3.25, 4.8, 4.22, 5.13, 6.10, 6.24, 7.8, 7.22, 8.12, and 8.26.

Ø  The Directors concluded the evening’s work with a two hour discussion session to establish district goals for FY 13.

Consent Agenda

The consent agenda was unanimously approved. With this action:

·  Minutes from the meeting of August 27, 2012 were approved.

·  Monthly business reports, including payment vouchers, as presented were approved.

·  A resignation letter from Gayle Allensworth as wrestling cheerleader sponsor was approved.

·  Final reading of board policies was approved including: Code No. 503.1 Student Conduct, Code No. 503.2 Expulsion, and Code No. 503.3 Fines – Fees – Charges, Code No. 503.3R1 Student Waiver and Reduction Procedures, and Code No. 503.3E1 Standard Fee Waiver Application.

The next meeting for the Red Oak Board of Directors is scheduled for Monday, September 24, 2012 at the District Administrative Center, 2011 North 8th Street, the Technology Building, Red Oak High Campus.
