Pre-Elementary
PE. Unit 1 – Go
Unit Summary
The aims of Unit 1 are:
· To become familiar with language and vocabulary needed to do the course.
· To become familiar with exercise types and the different stages of a Net Languages unit, and learn how to find useful learning tools on the Internet.
· To read a personal information email and write an introduction email to the tutor.
Language and vocabulary areas covered are:
· Numbers
· The alphabet
· Simple instructions
· The verb to be in the present simple (affirmative and negative)
· Basic verbs used to give personal information (have, live, etc.)
· Saying hello and goodbye
· Simple classroom language
U.1 Tutorial 1
There is one task in Tutorial 1:
1. Write sentences.
Look at the information. Write sentences.
Name: / Jordi / Geraldine / Tom / OscarAge: / 19 / 46 / 35 / 16
Nationality: / Spanish / Scottish / American / Australian
City: / Tarragona / Aberdeen / Chicago / Brisbane
Brothers/sisters: / 1 sister / 1 brother
1 sister / 2 brothers
2 sisters / 1 brother
Children: / No / 2 / No / No
For example:
My name is Jordi. I'm 19 years old. I'm Spanish, and I live in Tarragona. I have one sister. I don't have any children.
Now write sentences about the other people. Copy the sentences and send them to your tutor.
Students should write at least eight to ten sentences. This is a very mechanical task to give students an opportunity to show that they have grasped language and vocabulary covered in the unit. At this level, it is fine for students to produce very simple sentences, although they may have problems remembering to conjugate the verbs correctly. Feedback can focus on this, but given that this is the first piece of work students have sent, it should be very positive regardless of the quality of the student's work. Students may write either a short paragraph (as in the example above) or individual sentences. (Mark out of 10.)
U.1 Tutorial 2
Here is the task for Tutorial 2:
1. Write about yourself.
Now write a text about you.
For example:
Hello. My name's ...... I'm your student. I'm from ...... I'm ..... years old. I
live ......
Students write a short text (about 50 words) about themselves and their families, following the model in exercise 1. This should require use of language and vocabulary that has come up in the unit, especially the present simple of the verb to be and basic verbs like have and live, both in affirmative and negative sentences. However, students may well try to be more ambitious when writing about themselves, and feedback will probably need to focus on reformulating some of these ideas as well. However, as with Tutorial 1, because this is the first unit in the course, feedback needs to be very positive and should focus on reassuring the student that she/he is doing well. (Mark out of 20.)
Award marks for:
1. Task achievement – does the content match the task specifications? 4 marks
2. Range, complexity and accuracy of grammar 4 marks
3. Vocabulary range and accuracy 4 marks
4. Style and layout 3 marks
5. Overall effect on reader – is it coherent and communicative? 5 marks
U.1 Speaking Tutorial
Aims:
· To practise pronunciation of key words and phrases in Unit 1.
· To ensure that students have started the course successfully.
· For students and tutors to exchange basic information about themselves.
At this level, speaking tutorials can be a daunting and extremely challenging activity for learners, and the tutor will need to work hard to make help students feel comfortable and relaxed. For the Pre-Elementary course students will use a script to help them prepare for the Speaking Tutorial. Tell students that they should use the script to prepare for the Speaking Tutorial.
