______

Assignment: Question-Answer Relationship

Directions: Look at the image presented in class and come up with four (QAR) questions based on the four steps of Art Criticism.

1.  STEP ONE: Description:

List the objects that you see in the photograph.

Describe the most dominant sensory technical qualities. Sensory qualities include line, color, shape, form, texture, and space. Technical qualities include how the materials have been shaped on assembled.

QUESTION 1: RIGHT THERE: A question whose answer is right in the image – all you have to do is locate it and copy it down.

Your question 1:______

2.  STEP TWO: Analysis:

This step deals with the composition of the work. Use your knowledge about the art elements and principles of design to understand the composition of the work.

Analyze the work in relation of the principles of design (balance, emphasis, rhythm, movement, pattern, proportion, unity and variety)

Analyze the relationship, if any, between the subjects in the work.

QUESTION 2: PULLING IT TOGETHER: A question whose answer is in the image, but you have to pull it together from different parts of the image – you can’t simply copy it down from one place.

Your question 2:______

3.  STEP THREE: Interpretation:

Here we focus on the content of the work. This is where you make guesses about the meaning. Explain the meaning or mood of the photograph. Your interpretation must be based on visual facts and clues that you have collected during your first two steps. Your interpretation can be based on your feelings, but your feelings must be backed up by observation of what you actually see in the photograph.

QUESTION 3: ARTIST ME QUESTION: A viewer has to use the information provided in the artwork to figure out its meaning. In other words, the artist provides information that can help answer the question but does not provide the answer itself.

Your question 3:______

4.  STEP FOUR: Judgment:

In this step of art criticism you decide if the work of art is successful or not. You must determine the degree of artistic merit. This is the time to make your own decisions. You might like the work but not think it is a successful piece; or you may not like the work but know it is a very good work.

This might be general knowledge from your life experience, your knowledge of art and art theories, or opinions offered by experts.

QUESTION 4: ON MY OWN QUESTION: A question whose answer is not in the artwork itself.

Your question 4:______
