Background. Professional Development International (PDI) has provided cervical sample taker training for PCTs since 2000 and is the sole provider of this training in Devon and Cornwall and Somerset. PDI is also an approved provider of sample taker training for Wessex CCG. Regular attendance at the CCG screening meetings that include representation from the Quality Assurance Centre (South) Public Health England in Bristol ensures that Mary White, PDI’s owner, contributes to, and is kept up to date with, local and national issues.
In 2009, PDI produced its online cervical sample taker update module for doctors and nurses which has been taken up across the country. Details of the programme are below.

Information on process and content of the Cervical Sample Takers Update through PDI’s Online Workshop.
THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY WEB BASED AND HAS BEEN TESTED ON ALL BROWSERS SUCCESSFULLY AND ON ALL MAJOR OPERATING SYSTEMS.
THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN TESTED ON ALL BROWSERS INCLUDING IE 6 WHICH IS STILL DEPLOYED IN THE NHS.
Please note that your computer will need to have Adobe Flash Player installed to access the course. The course is not supported for tablet and mobile devices at this time.
The content of the programme follows the national standards (2006) and is the equivalent of a half day update or approximately two and a half to three hours
- The cost of each e voucher is currently £60.00 plus VAT per voucher. If a CCG buys 50 or more the cost is £55.00 plus VAT per voucher. A voucheris valid for 3 months for individual vouchers or 6 months if a CCG buys in bulk (50 or more). If a CCG finds it has some remaining at six months they can be re-authorised at PDI’s discretion.
- The procedure is as follows:
- Applicants can book via the website which will take them to the online shop .
- If a CCG buys in bulk, a list of access codes are sent to the CCG for distribution to individuals
- Payment can bemade by cheque via regular mail to the PDI office or online/BACS.
- If paying via card via the shop site an e voucher access code is issued automatically via e mail
- The e voucher has a unique access code relevant to that person only
- On log in,applicants have to confirm that they have completed their required audit in order to proceed. This is in accordance with NHS national standards.
- They will read a comprehensive instructions page including a test page to test their broadband speed prior to logging in.
- They supply the name of their educational lead( CCG Lead or whoever keeps theCCG sample taker register /data base)A data base of registered sample takers is a national requirement.
- The voucher lasts for 5 days from log into maintain interest
- Applicants may leave the programme an unlimited number of times within the 5 daysand will return at the point at which they leftwhich is automatically bookmarked.

- A reminder of patho-physiology
- Video clip of either Sure Path or Thin prep depending on which system is used in your area.
- A 40 minute presentation by a laboratory manager
- Post presentation quiz
- Examples of good practice in reaching the hard to reach groups especially ladies with learning difficulties and those from ethnic minorities
- A 40 minute presentation by a consultant in genito urinary medicine (women with discharges)
- GUM case studies
- A post course quiz with score with a percentage change in score from pre to post course
- Evaluation form is completed
- The ability to print off a certificate of completion.
- The final page will show the link to an Ask An Expert page where applicants can ask questions/ discuss any issues. Feedback will be supplied within 48 hours
- An electronic message will go back to the Education lead that they named at the beginning to confirm that they have completed the course. This information can be used to add to the local data base of sample takers
- A direct link back to the PDI web page where they can receive update news from labs/PPSAs in their own region(provided that the lab/ PPSA have supplied this.I am still tryingto get people to contribute to this so that they have access to issues of local concern. It could be that a web link to the PPSA or QA website is all that is required. However, the Ask An Expert page is a good medium and answers will be supplied to any questions that arise.
