Semester 2 Week 10 Newsletter- Grade 2

This Past Week’s Events
This past week we wrote our exam! We spent some time studying for it to consolidate our learning and for students to become familiar with the layout. Reading the layout of an exam involved a learning process as well. Often we see many students only looking for blank lines to fill in. However, more important are students’ ability to read the instructions on the exam first.
In addition, students were encouraged to spell to their best ability by using the phonetic sounds of words. You will notice that some questions were marked correctly even though the spelling was not completely accurate. Students were given marks on the exam if their spelling was correct or at least appeared phonetically appropriate. When students are decoding words they should be using the appropriate sounds to spell. As teachers, we value this stage of developing language skills.
In the remainder of the week, we reviewed the use of past tense for a writing task that will be completed by Friday.
Next Week’s Expectations
Next week we will begin a new unit on weather. We will learn about seasons and the weather we associate with them, as well as discuss and write about appropriate clothing, seasonal foods and holidays, and activities that we engage in at those times. Next week specifically we will begin with learning about weather in spring.
Now that grade 2 students have a better vocabulary bank in these topic areas, our over ESL expectations will be directed on compiling this familiar content into descriptive writing. Descriptive writing will include a focus on using their adjective vocabulary and making compound sentences (these are sentences using and; because).

Homework
We are happy to see that students are making a great effort to complete their weekly and weekend homework. We have noticed that some students may need help with parts of the homework, such as the sentences portion. We would recommend that parents allow their children to try to complete their homework on their own. This way, teachers can see if the child needs help and in what ways we can help them in class.
Raz-Kids Recording
This semester, teachers will award Raz-Kids Readers of the Week, every Friday. These students will be especially recognized by the teacher and have their best weekly recording played to the class. This will give the other students in the classroom an opportunity to hear their peers read. Stars will also be awarded to the weekly Raz-Kids readers to promote reading at home. Teachers will also begin to award stars to the students’ recordings as well.
Weekend Recount of Events
Teachers find it important for students to have the opportunity to practise free writing outside of the curriculum expectations. Therefore, students are encouraged to complete a diary entry to write about their weekend (recount). This may include fun activities and interesting foods or places they visited. Please encourage your child to use social conventions and details to describe events. The ongoing practice of correctly using capital letters, punctuation marks, sentence structure and tenses is valuable to their learning progress.

本週重點(04/16~04/20)
本週我們完成了期中考!我們花了一些時間複習,來加強學習的內容也讓學生對於考試的形式更加熟悉。理解考試的形式也是一個學習的過程。我們經常看到學生只尋找可以填寫的空格。然而更重要的是,學生應該先閱讀考試的相關說明。
除此之外,我們會鼓勵學生盡他們最大的努力,運用單字的發音來拼寫單字。您會發現有一些答案,即使拼寫是完全正確的,也不會給予分數。如果拼寫出的單字的發音,是接近於正確的發音,他們的考卷不會被扣分數。當學生在嘗試拼出單字的時候,他們應該使用所聽到的音去拼出來。作為老師,我們認為培養這個語言技巧是非常重要的。
考試過後,我們以寫作的方式複習過去式,並在週五完成這項練習。
下週重點(04/23~04/27)
下週,我們將會開始一個新的關於天氣的單元。我們將會學習四季以及與其相關的天氣,我們也會討論以及書寫關於適合的服裝、季節性食物、節慶與我們在特定季節會參與的一些活動。下週我們一開始會學習春天的天氣。
現在二年級學生在這個主題範圍上,已經有比較多的單字量,因此我們對他們的期望,是他們能以敘述性的寫作來表達熟悉的內容。敘述式寫作的重點將會包含,在書寫時使用他們所熟知的形容詞,以及造複合式句子(這些句子是有使用“and”, “;”, “because” )。

Homework回家作業
我們非常高興能看到學生們很努力地去完成他們的平日以及週末作業。我們有發現有一些學生可能在某些部分的作業上需要幫助,像是句子的部分。我們會建議家長,讓您的孩子試著自己完成他們的功課。這樣一來,老師就可以知道孩子是否需要幫助,以及我們應該在課堂中以何種方式來協助他們。
Raz-Kids Recording閱讀錄音:
這學期,老師會在每週五表揚兩位當週最佳Raz Kids小讀者。這些學生會被老師特別讚揚,並將他們當週最佳的錄音播放給全班共賞。此舉可以給班上其他學生,聆聽同儕閱讀的機會。同時我們也會獎勵星星給本週最佳Raz- Kids小讀者,來鼓勵學生在家閱讀。老師們同樣會開始以給星星的方式獎勵有錄音的學生。
回顧式週末作業:
老師們發現,對於學生能有機會在課程外自由的練習書寫是重要的。因此,我們鼓勵他們完成週末日記(回顧式寫作)。他們可以在完成Raz-Kids作業後,在作業本裡書寫日記。此日記寫作可以包含好玩的活動、有趣的食物及造訪的地方。請鼓勵您的孩子使用主要相關句型和細節來描述事件。
不斷的練習使用大寫字母、標點符號、句子結構和不同時態,這在他們的學習過程中是很重要的。
