Marlboro High School Chorus
Syllabus
2016-2017
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I’m so glad you’re going to be part of the chorus family this year! It’s an absolute pleasure to be working with all of you. Please refer to this syllabus as needed throughout the year. You will find grading information, expectations and performance responsibilities. Please read this syllabus over with your child, sign and complete the contact information page and have your child return the final page by Friday, September 9th.
I. Course Outline
Chorus provides students with a creative outlet to express themselves. It is a place for development of musicianship and where personal relationships flourish. Our chorus members maintain close relationships and we are very much a family. Students will learn pieces of music throughout the year in preparation for a variety of performance opportunities. They will attend rotating lessons once a week.
II. Grading Procedure
Students’ quarterly grades are based on: three weeks, within their section groups.
a) lesson attendance and participation- 40%
c) performance attendance- 30%
(See the attached list of required performances for the year.)
d) performance preparation- 10% Do you know your parts? Do you show expression? Is there emotion in your singing?
e) participation in rehearsals-20% Are you pulling your weight, making an effort?
Dress for concerts is black dress clothes, unless otherwise stated. We will order chorus shirts in the fall. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
III. Lessons & Make Up Policy
Students will attend weekly lessons based on their section. Each day of the week will be designated for one specific mixed choir or chamber choir section. Each student will pick one period that is convenient for him or her during their assigned day (either 1A,2,3,4,5 or 8B, depending on Mrs. Budryk’s availability). Students must obtain a signed lesson pass from Mrs. Budryk and give it to their classroom teacher before coming to their lesson. The period selected must be rotated by the student, as not to miss the same class twice in a row. If you have a study hall or lunch during these periods, it is highly recommended that you use this period for your lesson. This system works best at the high school level because of the many honor and AP classes of which music students are frequently enrolled.
Students who are unable to attend their weekly lesson during their scheduled day (ex. due to exams of school absence) may reschedule with Mrs. Budryk in advance for that week. Make-up lesson opportunities will be available throughout the quarter. Students may only use one make-up lesson each quarter.
The purpose of lessons is to provide small group learning to students. This time allows us to work on individual technique, specific choral music, NYSSMA solos, sight singing, etc. that is difficult to facilitate during our large full chorus rehearsals.
IV. Communication
Attached is a list of choral events for the year. Please make sure to mark calendars now to avoid conflicts later. Should an emergency or family function arise, a note from the parent/guardian must be emailed or sent in to Mrs. Budryk in advance of the absence.
If there is a question or concern, please feel free to email Mrs. Budryk at or call the school at 236-5810.
V. Extra Help
Mrs. Budryk is available for help during the day (specific periods TBA) or after school. Please make an appointment at least one day in advance for any after school help.
