Your Building Permit and Inspections
Once the Building Inspector approves the Building Permit Application, you will receive a copy of your signed Building Permit Application along with your Job Weather Card (the yellow card the Inspectors will sign).
Please post your Job Weather Card so it is visible from the street. The JWC should always remain at the property until the job is complete.
Building Inspector:The Building Inspector is Jim Butler. Inspections are typically done Monday – Thursday, 2 PM – 4 PM. All the Inspectors work for the Town on a part-time basis. The Inspectors are always accessible to discuss projects or answer questions. Please contact the office and arrangements will be made for you to speak with an Inspector.
If required and/or indicated, you are responsible to contact and schedule inspections with the Assessor (978-626-5212), the Fire Department (978-468-5560), the Board of Health Agent (978-626-5245), the Conservation Commission Agent (978-626-5247). You may also be required to submit other reports to the Building Department during construction (such as reports from an Engineer etc.)

If the proposed project required approval and a Decision/Special Permit from the Planning Board /Zoning Board of Appeals you must wait until the appeal period is over, contact the office of the Town Clerk and file the Decision/Special Permit with the Registry of Deeds. In order to obtain approval for a Building Permit Application you must bring a copy of the recorded document to the Building Department.
Once the work is complete a Certificate of Completion or a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued and mailed to the property owner. A copy of the Certificate of Completion or the Certificate of Occupancy will be filed in the folder for the property along with the signed Job Weather Card. It is important that the paperwork is finalized because lenders/buyers/appraisers etc. do review property files at Town Hall. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the contractor/developer and/or the property owner to ensure proper the paperwork was submitted and finalized.
