I can design a motion graph of a given situation.
- Sketch a graph for a walker who starts at the sonic ranger (the origin), walks away from the origin with constant speed for five seconds, stands still for five seconds, and then moves with increasing speed toward the origin for five seconds.
- Cletus runs as fast as he can at a constant velocity. Sketch a) what a distance vs. time graph would look like and b) what a velocity vs. time graph would look like.
I can describe the mathematical relationship of Newton’s 2nd Law (F=ma and a = F/m).
- Junebug hangs from a branch with one hand and is still. What is his acceleration? If he weighs 450 newtons (heavy for a stick figure), how much must the branch be pulling upward?
It must be pulling upward with 450 newtons of force. If it pulled with more than that, Junebug would accelerate upward; if less than 450 N, then Junebug would accelerate downward.
- Explain how varying the marble ramp will change the marble’s acceleration as it rolls down the ramp. Sketch a distance vs. time graph for a not-so-steep ramp and sketch distance vs. time graph for a steep ramp. At what angle will the ramp provide the greatest acceleration?
The more steep the ramp, the more acceleration (the limit would be the acceleration due to gravity). The greatest acceleration would be at 90 degrees.
I can analyze data to see if it supports Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, F=ma.
- Describe the motion of an object a) that is at rest if a balanced force acts upon it; b) that is moving to the right at 3.4 meters per second if a balanced force acts upon it.
The object at rest will stay at rest if balanced forces act upon it; the object moving to the right at 3.4 meters per second will continue to do so if balanced forces act upon it.
I can calculate momentum.
- Calculate the momentum of the following: Bertha (32 kg) running 2.5 m/s; Daisy (Feebs’ dog; 8.1 kg) running 5.4 m/s.
Bertha: momentum = mass x velocity = 32 kg x 2.5 m/s = 80 kg m/s
Daisy: momentum = mass x velocity = 8.1 kg x 5.4 m/s = 43.7 kg m/s
I can describe the mathematical relationship of Newton’s 3 Action/Reaction (momentum) p=mv.
- Cletus is swimming in a lake and doesn’t see that a speedboat is headed right for him. They collide. If Cletus striking the boat is the action force, what is the reaction force? How is the momentum before the collision compared to the momentum after the collision? Which – Cletus or the boat – is affected more by the collision? WHY?
a)The boat strikes Cletus
b)The momentum before the collision equals the momentum after the collision
c)Cletus is affected more because he has a lot less mass
I can describe Newton’s law of Gravitation and predict the gravitational force between two objects using Newton’s Law of Gravitation.
- What two variables determine the amount of gravity an object exerts? Neglecting friction, compare how different objects accelerate in a planet’s gravity field.
a) the masses of the objects and the distance separating them
b) neglecting friction, different objects will accelerate at the same rate
