COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course involves the study of the science that underpins physical performance and

provides the opportunity to apply these principles. The course incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and

physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, which are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health.

Students will cover a range of core and option topics and carryout practical (experimental) investigations in both laboratory and field settings. This will provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to apply scientific principles and critically analyze human performance. Where relevant, the course will address issues of international dimension and ethics by considering sport, exercise and health relative to the individual and in a global context. This course fulfills the Group 4 requirements of the IB Diploma. An IB Group 4 project will be required.

Supplies you’ll need for class-

3-ring notebook w/pockets, organized as you see fit & at least 2”, for class notes & handouts

Graphing Calculator (whatever you use in your math class is fine)

Paper, Pencils, Pens, Highlighters, Colored Pens and Pencils

Homework- Students should expect to spend an average of about 1 hour each night completing assignments and/or studying on their own.

Grading Policy-

Grades will be calculated accordingly for this course:

Daily Grades (practice ?s, pop quizzes, in-class assignments)10%

*Students may receive “bonus points” on tests if they show me that they have both outlined/taken notes on the chapter and answered all of the self-study questions at the end of each chapter.

*At the end of each semester, I may add as much as 2% to student’s grades as a reward for productive class participation.

Make-Up Work-

DAILY WORK: It is the student’s responsibility to determine what daily work needs to be made up. I strongly encourage you to have a “buddy” in class who will take care of your needs if you miss class. If you’re absent the day a classwork or homework assignment is due, it is due the day you return.

LABORATORIES: When a laboratory activity is missed, the student is required to either repeat the lab on his/her own time or obtain the data and explanation of the lab from their teammates (depending on the type of lab activity—please see me asap if a lab is missed). If the lab requires a lab report, class data will be used for the student to complete a lab report on their own. This is particularly important as selected IB labs will be graded internationally for appropriate marking.

  • It is your responsibility to turn it in on the due date, even if you are absent. Technology problems are not an excuse for a late assignment—you should always be prepared to turn in an assignment one day before it is due.
  • IB Internal Assessment Labs: Special guidelines and criteria apply to late assignments. The marks earned for IB Labs are incorporated into your final “exam” score.

TESTS: When a test is missed, the student is required to take the test on the day returning. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with me about the time. If the student is absent more than one or two days in a row, special consideration may be taken.

IB SEHS Requirements

This section is designed to give you an overview of what IB expects of you upon completion of this class. These percentages are based on how IB will grade you…not how you will be graded in my class.

I. Know how to use the Command Terms (pg.349-350 in text). “Objectives” refer to the type of command term used. There will be a quiz on these terms early in the course!

II. SL Assessment Specifications

A. Internal Assessment (IA) (Graded by Mr. McCall, with some labs randomly graded externally by the IB Organization). These are labs that are completed by students with minimal guidance……………………………………………………………...24% of IB SEHSScore (48 points possible)

Each, or part of each, lab will be graded in three areas: Design (D), Data collection and processing (DCP), and Conclusion and evaluation (CE). Each criterion can earn you a max of 6 points each (rubrics attached). This is how many points you can earn per criterion:

D (6 points) x 2 ………………..12 points possible

DCP (6 points) x 2……………..12 points possible

CE (6 points) x 2……………….12 points possible

Manipulative Skills: You will be graded on this section at all times. Manipulative skills involve how well you follow directions, how competent you are in material, method and equipment usage, and how well you follow safety guidelines. Those students who are mature, confident, educated leaders score the highest in this category……6 points possible

Group IV Project: This is an interdisciplinary project that groups SL SEHS students with SL physics, HL biologyand SL Chemistry students. More info will follow. You are only graded on this assignment based on the IB Personal Skills rubric (attached)….6 points possible

B. External Assessment (EA) These are the traditional IB “exams” that you will take next Mayto show how much you know about what you’ve learned in IB SEHS. A “paper” is just another way to say “test.”
