Statewide Electrical Construction Inspection Consultant

Job Duties: This electrical construction inspection consultant will be responsible for inspecting electrical installations on state construction projects and providing limited state agency assistance for life safety and emergency issues. Systems include life safety systems such as emergency power, emergency lighting and fire alarms; prison security systems; medium and low voltage power distribution, switchgear and transformers; lighting and controls; data and communications. Duties include identifying construction deficiencies, building code violations, design oversights, defective installations, unsatisfactory system performance and hazardous conditions related to electrical systems.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: This consulting position requires extensive knowledge of engineering principles and construction practices in the area of electrical building systems. This position also requires a thorough knowledge of building and life-safety codes and other pertinent regulations that are applicable to the design and construction of electrical building systems. Training and work experience in electrical construction, interpretation of plans and specifications, quality control and inspection is required. This position requires the computer skills of keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets and data base operations.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have construction experience including electrical supervision and inspection on medium and low voltage power systems and equipment, building lighting and controls, fire alarm, security, data and telecommunications systems. A Wisconsin State Electrician certification is required, journey level minimum, master level preferred. A certification as a Commercial Electrical Inspector through the Dept. of Commerce is also required. Registration as a Designer of Electrical Engineering Systems through the Dept. of Regulation and Licensing is not required but desirable. Letters of interest must include a description of the past construction and inspection experience related to the minimum qualifications as well as applicable certifications and licenses.
Projects: Geographically, this individual will be assigned projects in the northern half of the state but will assist the single staff inspector in the southern half as needed to balance workload. This includes projects for all agencies with a primary focus on University of Wisconsin facilities. Projects will include but are not limited to the following: UW Stout Jarvis Hall, UW Superior Jim Dan Hill Library, UW Superior Rothwell Student Center, UW LaCrosse Stadium, UW Stout Price Commons and DNR Wild Rose Fish Hatchery.
Schedule: Consultant will start immediately and work 40 hours per week. Duration of contract is variable but may run through July of 2009 or possibly longer.
