July 30: Port of Call in Skagway born to support the rush to the goldfields. Ride the Whitehorse Railroad, visit the gold-rush camps, kayak in the eagle-inhabited lakes, enjoy the lush forests and hanging glaciers or wander the boardwalks of the town and enjoy the shops.
July31: We’ll spend most of the day cruising in spectacular Glacier BayNational Park. It is one of the highlights of the trip. These are Alaska’s most famous glaciers. Listen closely as glacier calving (large pieces of ice breaking off into the sea) is a common occurrence. Naturalists on board will provide interesting commentary.
August 1: Scenic cruising in the NorthernGulf. Includes three hours in the famous College Fjords, scenic mountain-flanked fjords named after Ivy League colleges. STUNNING! Continue north in the afternoon.
August 2: Arrive in Whittier. Walk on to Princess’s private domed rail car for our scenic train ride around the Turnagain Arm, through the CoastalRange and into the charming town of Talkeetna. Stay in the quiet wilderness lodge with full views of Mt.McKinley (nature permitting). Those interested can enjoy the town or take a jet boat ride on the SusitnaRiver (with lovely views of wilderness, wildlife and Mt.McKinley).
August 3: Interesting motor coach ride this morning to DenaliNational Park (about 3 hours away). In the early afternoon, we’ll board the park buses for an interesting Natural History Tour of Denali National Park with hoped-for views of Mt.McKinley (from the other side and UP CLOSE) and varied wildlife. We’ll stay this evening in the beautiful Princess Wilderness Lodge just outside of DenaliPark. Optional shows are available tonight.
August 4: We transfer into Fairbanks this morning. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy an orientation tour of the area including a stop to see and learn about the Alaskan Pipeline. After lunch, we’ll board the Discovery Sternwheeler as it takes us down the ChenaRiver. We’ll see Susan Bucher and her champion dogs and stop at an authentic (and very interesting) AthabascanVillage. This activity is a MUST while in Fairbanks. Evening is free (optional salmon bake available).
August 5: Transfer to the FairbanksAirportfor our flight home.
While on land, we stay at the following EXCELLENT lodges:
Talkeetna – Mt.McKinley Wilderness Lodge
Denali – Princess Wilderness Lodge
Fairbanks – Princess Riverside Lodge (or similar)
All of these lodges can be viewed online at Princesslodges.com. Princess uses these lodges in most cases. If not available, comparable lodges may be substituted.
Information about shore excursions available at the different ports of call will be sent to cruise participants in March. We will offer PRIVATE SHORE EXCURSIONS for our group featuring the best each port has to offer (in our opinion). If you are interested in cancellation/interruption insurance it is available for $149-$199 per person and can be purchased up to the time of your final payment. Additional information is available if you are interested.
WebbTours PrivateShore Excursions
There are lots of advantages when you travel with a group:
- You are accompanied by a director who will show you how to get the most out of your vacation
- You get the benefit of group discounts, making your vacation less expensive
- Somebody else worries about the hassles like transfers to and from the ship, airports, airline tickets, ship knowledge (getting the best cabin, etc) and more.
- AND, you have the option to join us for private, prearranged, economical shore excursions at each port and during portions of the land tour
On this tour, we offer the following excellent, prearranged shore excursions:
KETCHIKAN: Tour the town (including TotemBightPark), learning the interesting Native American history in the area. See world famous carvers at work and learn the stories of the Totems. Stroll through the lovely city park, see Dolly’s House and end the tour with reserved seats to a one hour LUMBERJACK show which everyone LOVES! We are in Ketchikan from 9-2
JUNEAU: Combination tour including a visit to stunning Mendenhall Glacier (visiting the interpretive center there) followed by admission to the very interesting and beautiful Glacier Gardens. Believe it or not, you are in a rain forest, and the scenery here is lush, colorful and very creative. We are in Juneau until 9:00 in the evening so there is plenty of time for shopping, whale watching or a myriad of other options.
SKAGWAY: GOLD! This is the gateway to the gold fields and we’ll enjoy a scenic ride over beautiful WhitehorsePass into the Yukon Territory of Canada. The scenery is magnificent and we’ll make several stops along the way to see waterfalls, mountain vistas or wildlife. Upon returning to town, we have tickets to the famous Days of ’98 Revue telling the story of Soapy Smith, Skagway’s most famous con man. You’ll then still have half a day to relax, wander the boardwalk streets or book an additional excursion through the ship.
These excursions are the HIGHEST QUALITY using companies we have known for years. They are PRIVATE for our group only and will give you a great overview of these areas.
