Northside UMC Sunday School Guidelines 2015-2016

Expectations of all students involved in any classes, activities, or events associated with NorthsideUnitedMethodistChurch:

Kids will be kidsand sometimes adults can be kids too, but we hold everyone to be accountable for their decisions and choices. We ask that everyone respects one another and doesn’t cause any harm, physically or mentally to another student or teacher. This will be cause for the student to be removed from the class/event at the time of the situation. There will be a parent meeting with Evy. Each situation will be recorded in Evy’s files. If there are 2 incidents during the year, the child will need a break from Sunday School for an amount of time that will be determined during the Parent Meeting with Evy and the Pastor.

Sunday School Rules and Expectations for Nursery-12th Grade Students & Adults

  • No physical abuse towards anyone (automatically taken out of class/event & Evy meets with parents and then we determine when child can attend Sunday School again)
  • No Swearing (High School does 10 pushups/crunches if they swear…the High School Youth came up with this consequence for their actions and it has become a Northside Tradition. It has been an excellent example of owning what we say.)
  • Everyone is to act in a Christian Manner as we help and encourage one another on our Faith Journey.
  • No Weapons, Drugs, Alcohol or anything illegalallowed on property.
  • Please leave personal toys at home; as they may get lost at church or misplaced. The church is not responsible for missing items.
  • Please discourage students from bringing cell phones or electronics to class. There may be times where classes use electronics like IPods, IPads and cell phones to help in teaching the curriculum, but those are to be provided by the teachers. We ask that all students not use their cell phones in class. If the cell phones are out and being used to text, they will be taken away for that class and returned to the parent.
  • Nursery-4th Grade Children can not be dropped off at church. There needs to be a parent/guardian in the building with them. 5th Grade and up may come to church on their own, but we encourage all parents to participate in Worship as we engage your children and youth in Christian Education.

Information about Sunday School:

Communion: The first Sunday of each month the 9th-12th Grade students stay in service. Other grades will re-enter the sanctuary at the time of serving communion. Once students receive communion, they reunite with their families by sitting back with them for the rest of church.

Does my student need to go to Sunday School? All students are welcome to stay in church with their parents if they would like to. Sunday School is another opportunity for them to learn. Older students in 7th-12th grade also may participate in the worship service by being in the Choir, being an usher, a greeter, a Liturgist, etc. When students come to class, please encourage them to stay in class until the end of church service. 9th-12th Grade students also have the option of assisting in other Sunday School classes as well as teaching opportunities for the Nursery-6th Grade.

Pager System: Our Nursery has a pager system and parents must take a pager when leaving their child in the nursery.

If other students are having separation anxiety or may be having a hard time in Sunday School we encourage parents to also take a pager so they can be contacted just in case. All pagers are located in the Nursery and need to be signed out.

Parents need to pick up their Nursery-4th graders after Worship!Nursery-4th Grade NEEDS to be picked up by a parent after church service has ended. Teachers will stay with all students until they are picked up and it is extremely helpful to get your children and then go to fellowship hour so our volunteer teachers can clean up their class and also enjoy Fellowship. Students 5th Grade and up can be dismissed without a parent unless instructed otherwise by a parent.

Playground: 5th and up can be dismissed and can be on the playground after church service has ended. The Nursery attendant becomes the Playground attendant at the end of Sunday School and once she is finished with our Nursery students. The parent/guardian is fully responsible for their children on the playground and at church at all times.

Everyone is welcome to use the Playground during the rest of the week.
The playground is not to be used after dark.

Other ways you can help out:

  • Pray for our students and teachers
  • Volunteer to be an assistant for a class to be extra eyes, ears and hands
  • Volunteer to chaperone special events
  • Communicate with teachers
  • Be an example to all of our Sunday School Students
