Course Description: This area of study is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed in the Criminal Justice field. Students will utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Students will study various requirements for employability in the criminal justice field including ethics, teamwork, and professionalism. Students will prepare for and participate in mock job interviews. Preparation includes construction of a portfolio that can be utilized in obtaining employment upon completion of the student’s program. The course may place the students in community sites that are part of various criminal justice agencies (such as county and local law enforcement, county judicial offices, social services, etc.) for hands-on or work-based experiences. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction related to criminal justice occupations. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, Skills USA. The West Virginia Standards for 21st Century Learning include the following components: 21st Century Content Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills and Technology Tools. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools, and content standards and objectives.
