ELECTION PROJECT

OVERVIEW

Elections are times of extreme emotion and catharsis, as anyone following the national election knows. Catman & Mary, an Emmy award-winning production company based in Brooklyn, NY, is seeking emerging filmmakers to help us create stunning, evocative images in the week around November 4. We are especially interested in getting images from the most competitive house races, and will favor filmmakers who can shoot in those locations.

These images will be used to create a non-narrative film that combines stunning visuals and music to convey the depth of emotion around all elections. We want THOUGHTFUL, ARTISTIC IMAGES – this is not news b-roll or even a documentary. Think of it as part of A Day in the Life series of books, or the Koyanisqaatsi series – take your time to make great images. We want to see the beauty and emotion of elections, the investment that people have, and the way things look when it’s all over, when the last one has gone home and the floors are littered with the end.

We’ll pay $750 to twelve DPs to shoot over the course of three days – one day next week, November 4th, and November 5th. We’ll also pay an additional $500 to the three best DPs as judged by us. While we have done partisan content in the past, this is a totally non-partisan look at the emotions of elections. You will required to provide releases for people appearing in shots where your camera is not in motion. We recommend bringing a friend to help you get releases signed.

Important: we will retain the rights to your footage without reservation. This is work-for-hire. But it’s going to be an amazing film!

Here’s what we’re looking for:

- slow motion

- time lapse

- people

- signs & paraphernalia

- emotion, emotion, emotion – are people proud to be voting? Angry? Sad at a loss?

- watching the returns – at bars, at home, on the street

- going to vote – in line, getting in the car, the ritual act of it all

FORMAT

This is an HD project, so we are only accepting HD footage, including the HVX. We will ship drives to you in November with return postage and $375. When we receive the drive back, we’ll send the second $375. By mid-December, we’ll select the winning DPs and announce that on our website along with sample shots from everyone.

When the piece is done, we’ll of course make certain that all participants receive hi-res copies for their reels and to share with friends. Our distribution plan is to go for festivals and to go for Europe! We think the final piece is going to be absolutely incredible – with your help!

TIMING

Selected DPs will participate in a conference call with us on Monday, October 27th and will be expected to prep their shoots for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of November. You must submit a reel to be considered. No exceptions. Write for more information, or better yet, get those reels together and submit! Final deadline for submission is Friday at midnight. No submissions will be accepted after that time.
